Gr 4–7—Internationally, the World Cup is the most widely viewed sports event, with a viewing audience surpassing that of the Super Bowl and the Olympics. From modest beginnings in 1930, soccer's biggest competition has soared in popularity. Doeden has scored a winning goal with this insightful look at the game's prestigious championship event. Like his earlier book The Super Bowl, this latest is well researched. He discusses the history, appeal, and format of this event, as well as some fundamentals of the game. The chapter on heroics and heartbreaks of past World Cups is quite lengthy and may not resonate well with readers who are not dedicated fans. Men's and women's soccer are covered. True to his engaging style of writing, he presents information with abundant use of appealing photographs and charts. In addition, he addresses in an objective manner controversial issues that have marred the reputation of the sport, most notably the 2015 scandal that rocked the governing body of international soccer. VERDICT Once again, Doeden has demonstrated his sharp skills as a sportswriter. It should not be hard to entice sports fans with this title.—Jeanette Lambert, formerly at Nashville-Davidson County Schools

Once again, Doeden has demonstrated his sharp skills as a sportswriter. It should not be hard to entice sports fans with this title."―School Library Journal (Journal)"The story of the World Cup, crown jewel of international soccer. Doeden's very sharp contribution to the vast world of World Cup literature deserves to be on every young soccer enthusiast's bookshelf. The book, pulsing with cracking photographs and archival images, starts at the beginning, with accounts of the first international match (attended by 4,000), between England and Scotland (which won) in 1872; the first international match outside the British Isles in 1902; and the initiation of the World Cup in 1930. Doeden writes with an easy hand, a little feverish when the action is hot, conveying plenty of information with plenty of momentum. He devotes a page to the recent FIFA bribery scandal and another to hooliganism―less-savory parts of the game―and then goes on to recap the classic matches and the introduction of women's soccer to the World Cup. There's lots of captivating material here: Zinedine Zidane's head-butt, Brandi Chastain's brilliant shootout goal in the 1999 final, the unreal 'barrage of goals' that ended the 1970 cup, the introduction of African teams in the 1980s, the suspected cheating in the 1982 game that allowed West Germany and Austria to advance if Austria failed to score (they failed to score) and keep Algeria out of the contest. And of course there is Pelé. Mesmerizing."―starred, Kirkus Reviews (Journal)"This brief but informative overview, filled with black-and-white and color photographs, covers the history of the World Cup from its 1930 debut to its popularity today. It recounts the most memorable matches and moments from Men's and Women's World Cup history and spotlights some of the sport's greatest players: Brazil's Pelé, Argentina's Diego Maradona. Even though the Women's World Cup didn't start until 1991, its prominence continues to grow. The book doesn't shy away from mentioning pay inequality between the men and women players (leading to recent lawsuits), some of the sport's scandals, the hooliganism at certain matches, or the strange history of the sport's trophy. Due to its popularity, the men's tournament plans to expand from 32 teams to 48 by 2026. One of the most remarkable aspects of the World Cup is how affordable the tickets are for everyone, and how it promotes good sportsmanship and worldwide goodwill. Soccer fans, or just casual readers, will enjoy this short but engaging supplemental resource."―Booklist (Journal)

The game of soccer, or football as it’s more commonly known, was just a little game during the 1800s. Popular, yes, but not wildly so. Just two countries, Scotland and England, “faced off for the world’s first international match in 1872.†The British had a hand-selected team of seasoned players while Scotland’s were from a single club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the match, which had a “crowd of 4,000 fans†cheering on their respective teams who were playing on a muddy field. Despite the seemingly mismatched teams, the “first international soccer match ended in a scoreless tie.†It wouldn’t be the end of international competition, but rather the beginning.By the early 1900s soccer definitely proved to be a high-interest international sport. As with anything, soccer “needed a common governing body to oversee international competition.†It was in Europe that saw the birth of the “Féderation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA),†an association that grew both in scope and power over the decades. FIFA’s influence was strong from the beginning, but the World Cup tournaments were not held consistently, especially during the World Wars and the Great Depression. It was after World War I (1914 to 1919) that “the balance of soccer power began to shift to South America†during the Olympic games of the 1920s.Fast forward through the years, the ever-changing face of power shifts, teams, and dreams, the “1950 World Cup marked the start of of a new era.†Instead of a paltry audience of 4,000 fans, Brazil “faced Uruguay for the World Cup crown in front of 200,000 fans.†Global superstars such as Hungarian Ferenc “Galloping Major†Puskás and young Brazilian, Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé) began to wow the ever-growing crowds. The popularity of the game continued to grow around the globe and with the entry of the Africans on the scene in the 1980s, “the vision of a competition that spanned the globe started to become reality.â€The action was hot and heavy as teams vied for the World Cup title and you’ll read about many of the action-packed games in this book. Not surprisingly, in 1988 FIFA welcomed women on board and “12 teams traveled to China For the Women’s World Championship.†The astounding growth and popularity is probably not much of a surprise to soccer fans. In a whirlwind tour through the history of the game, this book will introduce you to some very memorable matches, amazing players, stunning goals, the dark side of the game, and you’ll learn many more amazing facts about the World Cup, “soccer’s global championship.â€This is an fun, fascinating glimpse into the history and sport of soccer and the World cup young fans will love. The book has eye-popping full color actions shots as well as black and white that give it that nice historical zing. As usual, Matt Doeden stays away from a simple statistical compilation and makes the game come alive. Even young people who aren’t sports fans can’t help being drawn into the world of soccer (football) in this book. There are numerous informative sidebars that add many interesting vignettes to the read. For example we learn about the explosive FIFA scandal that stunned the sports world. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, source notes, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. Also included are stats for both the Men’s World Cup (1930 to 2014) as well as those of the Women’s World Cup (1991 to 2015).Age Range: 10 to 13 yearsGrade Level: 5 to 9SPECTACULAR SPORTS:The College Football ChampionshipThe Main EventTouchdownUltimate FightingThe World SeriesLong BallGoal!Swish!Daytona 500ScoreThis book courtesy of the publisher (to the library).
