As someone who has written about basses, bass history and bass players for a major instrument manufacturer for many years, I have to say that this is hands-down the finest bass book I've ever seen (and that's saying a lot, because I have ’em all). Geddy Lee's enjoyment of and reverence for the instrument comes through on every page, with sincere appreciation, great humor and keen attention to detail. Equally delightful are his personal thoughts on how someone who was never really a bass collector becomes such a thoughtful one, and his account of how such a high-profile musician goes from really not knowing all that much about the history of his instrument to being avidly well-versed in it. His interviews with other bass players are super cool, both for the conversations in themselves and for the fact that he enlists players you might be charmingly surprised to see him hanging with (Jeff Tweedy, Adam Clayton and Bill Wyman, for example — how cool is that?). The collection is jaw-dropping. The writing provides a terrific glimpse into who he is and what he does, and the photography is stunning. His enthusiasm for the instrument, for becoming a collector of them, and for creating such a lavish volume is a real joy for me, and I really can't thank him enough for this book. It's the new height of essential.

Everything Rush does is grand, epic, intricate, meaningful, lovely. When the individual members of the band branch out, the result of their effort is no different. Geddy has created a masterpiece of love for the bass, its aficionados, its players, its future players, and for those of us who simply appreciate the beauty of something done well.My appreciation for bass players began with my discovery of Rush, and Geddy has caused it to spread a little farther. One can tell that this book was conceived and assembled in the same way any Rush album was; Geddy just did what he loved, produced something he himself would admire and then shared it with us.This book (in its totality) is a piece of art. I can't imagine an equal level of appreciation and wonder could be earned from the kindle version. Get the real thing, the massive, real, heavy thing that is this book and get absorbed in the story of the bass.

I'll start off with this; the headline says it all, I'm literally an emotional wreck after reading this book. The influence Geddy has had on me as a bass player and the impact Rush has had on my life is nothing I could ever put in to words. I'll assume everyone who reviews this book will know exactly what I'm speaking of. All of that to say, this book is ef'fin awesomeness and then some!This is a great rundown of basses, their history, the goods and bads, the feelings, the songs they made noise on and the list goes on and on, but it's all in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever listened to any kind of music, not just bass players. The book is fun and full of nostalgia that no other book covers, especially ones about basses. You can't go wrong buying this book for your favorite musician.As a side note, be prepared when you get to the end, your emotions will get the best of you. As we all know, Rush is no longer and as I read about a certain pair of custom items from Le Studio (I'm not giving away any book secrets here. I'll let it hit you as it did me), I lost it. This is "The End" and it won't hit you until get to those final pages. I doubt this was intentional, but it happened and I'm not mad about it. Geddy, his basses, his collection(s), their songs, their albums, their history, this book, it will all hit you when you get to that certain page and then it hits you hard; the realization that it really is the end. The end of many chapters.Thanks Geddy for the amazing book! Thanks Rush for all you've done for everyone on this planet. You've left your mark and made the world a better place. The End.

I bought this for my husband who plays bass and is a big Rush fan, he's been carefully thumbing through it in awe for over an hour now. It's even bigger and thicker than I expected, and the quality is fantastic. There is an incredible amount of information, pictures, and even large fold out pages. Every detail is perfect.Highly recommend the hardcover version. I bought it during presale for $40 but even at the $75 price on the back, it would have been a steal.

This is an interesting book. While anyone who reads about the war knows generally what the Seebees did, this book tells who they were and their qualifications were.. I didn't understand all the.technical stufgf, I got the idea. It was a good 2ay bbc.co to learn more and about the war

An informal anecdotal book, which was what I had expected. My uncle served on Guadalcanal and Bougainville in the Seabees during WWII. I learned from this book a sense of what his experience must have been like, but nothing to match the bloody horrific snapshots he sent home, and no sense of the islanders souvenirs he obtained in the Solomons I know not how. This book is not complete, is not analytical, and is not particularly well organized, but it is satisfying, close-to-the-ground writing.

While not an exciting book, it does an excellent job of bringing to light some of the unsung heroes of World War II. People tend to think of the War as a series of battles with infantry and artillery blasting and it is easy to overlook the tremendous efforts of the Seebees in building and preparing the buildings and roads and airstrips and communications and supply depots and mess halls.... and the list goes on and on. I gained a tremendous respect for the Seabees with this book and I recommend it to all.

If like the modern "American" is so wrapped up in social "correctiveness" try and remember this is WWII, and JAPS is used exclusively through out this amazing book on the REAL HISTORY of Americans war machine. The "Can Do" American Seabee was in so many cases the FIRST to hit the beaches NOT the Army nor the Marines in many cases. A real good reading book with extensive info regarding the scarfices that these "OVER THE HILL GANG" did to "finish the job".

My son is a Seabee and this book was an excellent primer on the beginnings of these builders who fight!

My father was one of the initial cadre Sea Bees in WWII. I was able to read about some of the activities he endured and those he was assigned with. Excellent book and want to thank the authors and publishers for getting this book out.

Very good book on why, how and things the SEABEES did. Written at the end of World War 2 (Fighting was still going on and plans for invading Japan) kept the author from telling somethings. References to Japanese as JAPS can problem turn some people off, but probably should remember what was going on in the world at the time it was written. Story about South Pacific natives and a goat was funny. I was a SEABEE for 27 years in the Naval Reserves and didn't know some of the things this book said the BEES did.

Great historical gem for any seabee & CEC Officer. The personal accounts bring thw history to life. Brings a greater depth of pride of what we do.

I'm a long time fan of John's macro photography. He's a world-leader in high magnification insect photography, and has really pushed the envelope of what's possible. I make my own attempts at this kind of photography and I look to John's work as the gold standard.I've been eagerly awaiting the english translation of this book since it was first announced. It's a fantastic (big!) book of John's photos with informative captions provided by an entomologist.John's got incredible skill at capturing amazing close ups of live insects in the field. You can check out his flickr account (user name johnhallmen). If you like that kind of photography, or are just a fan of how what amazing little machines insects are, then you can't go wrong with this book.

This book, now available as an e-book via Amazon, is one of the richest and most enjoyable books about bugs and macro photography that I have read. Each macro photograph is unusually expressive as a photograph and the accompanying text is delightfully informative. It is also a great introduction to macro photography and/or entomology. Reading the book to young children would be lots of fun and educational. For those who enjoy macro photography and/or entomology as a hobby or special interest, this book is nothing short of inspirational.

This was purchased for another student I had who has a keen interest in insects. It was a wonderful book, large, and had amazing photos. My only reservation was it was about insects in Scandinavia. But he was thrilled when he got the book and was very enthralled with the photos. I hope this gift will help him to continue his quest to learn all things insect. Again, another student who has a clear future.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my 12 year old granddaughter who is fascinated with insects. There is not a bug in the forest, on the shore, or in the city that she does not stop, drop to the ground and examine up close. This book is a dream come true for a girl who could be a future entomologist. The photographs are absolutely stunning (if not a bit frightening in some instances). The whole family seems to enjoy it and it was in the center spot on the coffee table on my last visit.

I purchased this book to use with my youth gardening group (grades 1-6) at an upcoming gardening camp. The pictures are great, and while the camp won't be held until the fall, I'm already planning to use it as a central part of the program.

Beautiful book, stunning photographs and a must have for any lover of all things creepy and crawly. I bought this for my 10 yr old and he has spent countless hours studying each page of this book.

I can't believe how close the photos get on the bugs. The droplets of water are amazing, the number of hairs on their heads, appendages, etc....WONDERFUL! You can't get any closer than this! I'm an artist and needed to see the details.

I don't know if Jennifer has ever heard the quote I used as the headline for my review, but I feel like that is the underlying theme for all of her books. I read the first two and loved them and have been waiting rather impatiently for this one to come out. I loved every bit of it! I am in a season of my life right now where it would be so easy to slip into a very casual way of presenting myself and keeping house( SAHM to three fantastic and busy children aged 6 and under.) However after reading Jennifer's books I was moved to clear out the unflattering or ill fitting clothes from my closet and only have garments that match with each other and fit well. The other day I woke up feeling exhausted from tending my baby all night, yet I had to get up and take my other children to some appointments we had scheduled for that day. What a relief it was to go into my closet and spend 15 seconds putting together a well fitting and matching outfit! I no longer save my nice clothes for when my children are older, but wear them now and it really makes me feel better about myself. I light candles and play beautiful music on my iPhone during the day and my mornings no longer feel quite as frantic. I sit down and talk with my children during lunch while drinking a cup of tea or coffee from a beautiful mug. I could go on and on(obviously) but I have to say following Jennifer's advice about living each day to the fullest, being present in the moment and elevating daily life to a beautiful experience has been some of the best advice I have ever received for this time in my life. From the bottom of my heart, Jennifer, I thank you. My days and my years will be beautiful.

This book, while filled with interesting pointers, is more of a philosophical self-help book than "Lessons" or "At home with." I preferred the concrete tips of the previous two but found this interesting if not immediately helpful.

Cute book only I feel like it is just a re-cap of the first book "Lessons from Madame Chic". It does have some new pieces of information but I did not even finish reading it. I got too bored. If you have the first one, you won't be missing much if you pass on this.

I have read all of Jennifer's books and am an avid follower of her blog and YouTube videos. I believe in the way that she talks about looking your best always and pratice my own 10 item wardrobe. My favorite book was her first book, this would be my second. Because of this books I find myself, when I am in tough situations asking "what would jennifer do?" And have more often than not changed my behavior for the bether. I feel calmer and more poised (the whole point, right?) And try to relish is life's simple pleasures. So if you're reading this and want to learn more about becoming a better version of yourself... I would recommend that you purchase this book!

This is a helpful book for women who strive for a pulled-together, poised lifestyle. It would be especially helpful for younger women, in their 20's and 30's. I purchased it, but found I already had heard many of the tips before, so gave it to my 25 year old daughter. I have no doubt she will greatly benefit from the advice to live more polished and poised. I loved Jennifer L. Scott's other two books: Lessons from Madame Chic and At Home with Madame Chic.

I've been a follower of Jennifer's blog for a long time, at least back to 2009 or 2010. I loved her first book, and the second book was good too. This book was disappointing as it was quite repetitive and mentioned points already stated before in her other two books. I do appreciate what Jennifer was trying to say but I felt she could have benefitted from a different editor who could have steered her in a better direction, or at least pointed out which areas of the book were too repetitive. The character of Madame Chic (or should I say Madame Shrew?) needs to be retired. No doubt she gave Jennifer some good advice during her stay in France, but from the stories Jennifer tells in all three books, Madame Chic sounds like a bit of a shrew who wasted no opportunity to scold Jennifer or "reprimand", "school" her on something, as if Jennifer had no clue about anything! My favorite part of the book was when Jennifer stood up to Madame Chic after Madame Chic told her (in front of their family at the dinner table) what is the correct way to eat cheese in France. I doubt the way Jennifer was eating the cheese was hardly as offensive as Madame Chic made it out to be. Good for Jennifer for standing up for herself, I would have done the same thing after spending months of Madame Chic breathing down your neck about the littlest things and probably embarrassing her. I still follow Jennifer, her YouTube channel is worth checking out and she generates good discussions on different topics there.

I read Jennifer's first two books, and couldn't wait to get Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic. It does not disappoint!!! Jennifer makes many good points in this book. I liked the quiz, lists and points that she was able to put additional focus on from her first two books. I think grooming, presentation, and poise are still important today if not more important. When flying, many look like we just rolled out of bed, and I remember when it was exciting, and you dressed to fly. I also like to hear/watch her weekly commentary on her blog The Daily Connoisseur. I plan on giving this book to several friends for Christmas as I think the message is so good. Thanks

This third book by Jennifer L. Scott is another wonderful, encouraging book of tips and advise to improve your self, your manners, your home, and your community by paying attention to how you present yourself and your home, by using good manners and social graces, and by making the world a more lovely place. Jennifer's books are warm, helpful, and inspiring! I have read all three of her books and I just love them! Thank you Jennifer!
