Pat built that first garden out of necessity-- she needed a source of fresh herbs for her country inn, and she needed a way to garden without the laborious digging and tilling of traditional gardening methods. In Lasagna Gardening, Pat describes that first layered garden and the more than 30 that followed it. Through her story she shares the lessons she's learned in her nearly 50 years of gardening experience. Pat now hosts a weekly call-in radio show on gardening and is the proprietor of The Potager, a home and garden center and café in Wurtsboro, New York.

I had been reading online about lasagna gardening and finally decided to get this book which seems to be the how-to guide. Has some really neat information in it. It seems to focused more towards the northern states in plant suggestions but still has a lot of neat advice. I am trying out the potato garden where you just put down the newspaper and then put hay, etc. on top. My potatoes seem to be growing well but still haven't done my first harvest so we will see.

This is a good book for beginners. The concept is a good one. If you are a more experienced gardener, you would do well to just google an article for the method. Most of this book is pretty basic gardening information that would only benefit beginners. I got it, found a few ideas after reading a few pages and scanning the rest. It will be a good book to loan to friends just getting started.

The book was great - getting a little age on you makes you wonder how you can get your garden ready - this book was just what the doc ordered! Being the cynical being I am when I was at the co-op I asked a few questions around the method - while some didn't call it lasagna gardening most were familiar and many had been doing it for years. My beds are in process - those amazon boxes (of which I have WAY too many) are perfect for the bottom layer after you remove the tape and labels - add some peat moss and keep using her method.I loved the writing style - easy to understand and so full of ideas! I am hoping she writes another book with pictures of her gardens.

I love gardening, but am a lazy gardener with a challenging yard: bad soil, with lots of trees and shade, and blasts of hot afternoon sun. Ugh. Throw in a demanding career and family and who has time to garden? This book changed EVERYTHING for me!!! I am obsessed with composting and leaves and newspaper now..haha. I love everything about this way of gardening so much I've shared this book with my mom, my sister, and my niece. We've all gone crazy in our gardens! I have built my first lasagna garden, a trial pumpkin patch that I'm just not sure will get enough sun, but those little pumpkin seedlings are so happy and healthy! I already have plans for two more lasagna gardens this year, plus I'm starting 3-4 more now for fall/spring. This book is the best gardening book I have ever read. Go get it now! You won't regret it!

There is quite a bit of useful information in this book and it is GREAT for a reference guide. It is an easy read. The information in it needs updated as it pertains to what to use as mulch/compost and little things like that based on what we now know about chemical additives in our paper products but is otherwise AWESOME.

I've heard of it, read it once or twice on garden store websites and even saw a video or two on Youtube. I haven't tried it as of yet, because I don't have spaces like they say to have for the soil... and not enough newspapers (newspapers here are based on soy ink, not lead)

I have been Lasagna gardening for years all by myself....this book is absolutely a treasure trove of great information! So glad I bought it and have recommended it to my friends....none of us is getting any younger and this book and way of gardening fits the bill for easier more bountiful crops!

This book is a good resource for the home gardner or hobbyist. The concepts are explained, and the diagrams are given, to make the concept clear. Overall, a good reference to keep along with your gardening tools. Recommended.

This cookbook book showed up on my daily BookBub email for a couple of dollars (Kindle version), so I thought, what the heck? I'll get it. I am not sorry I did, except for all the extra calories I am now consuming. Not only does it have plenty of recipes for all kinds of cakes, it has other great information too. Perfect for making cakes with a child, as the recipes don't involve a lot of ingredients or use of a mixer. Perfect for seniors, too. Each recipe makes two mug cakes and uses ingredients even an occasional cook/baker would have on hand. It's the perfect way to satisfy a craving for cake without having tgo to the trouble of making a whole one. This cookbook would make a great gift.

Oh my goodness this is a dangerously delicious, fast and easy recipe book! These recipes are out of this world. Very easy and I stress easy to make. Bought this to make with my 8 year old and we have had fun trying new recipes. I enjoyed making these fun mug cakes so much I have purchased 3 more for friends as gifts. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants 1 or 2 mug cakes in a jiffy. What is really nice about these recipes is that you don't have an entire cake tempting you! ;) A single portion is perfect for us!

My oven does not get used when it's hot, no air conditioning, so if I bake, it's in the microwave. Love this cookbook, lots of good ideas. Recipes for small amounts, the pineapple upside down cake is one of the best, got the son- in-law and grandchildren vote. Love everything I've tried so far. I have the Kindle version and find it easy to use.

I was so excited about this book. I had no idea there were so many recipes that you could make in a mug! I have 4 boys and can now make a different recipe to match their moods. I am finding these mug cakes to be such a great after school snack option. I love that there are also options to make mug cakes for different dietary restrictions, like my youngest is lactose intolerant. If you want sugar free, gluten free, dairy free, nut free, vegan, or low carb there are substitution guidelines for each. The boys love all the cakes that they have tried so far!*I received this ebook for free, however all opinions are 100% my own.

This book is awesome. My 10 year old and 3 year old made the Devil's Food Mug cake last night (with my help). It was so much fun and absolutely delicious. There's are tons of sweet and savory recipes in there. Most ingredients can be found in your pantry. There's aren't any expensive ingredients that are called for either. It's a great addition to my cookbook collection.

One of the best "cookbooks" out there!. The author clearly cared about the craft. My boys love pouring over the recipes to see if we have the ingredients. If we don't, they see what they can add instead. The Absolute Best Mug Cakes Cookbook is the perfect title. The directions are very easy to understand. The ingredients for the most part are either in your pantry now or easily gotten At the local grocery store.I am so glad for this cookbook! With the clearly written how's and why's I can whip up a yummy treat without a whole lot of mess. Especially if I don't want to share!!I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I really did try out some of the different mug cakes to form my opinion. This will remain on my Kindle.

Living alone, I was looking for recipes for meals. Although, I was in a hurry an saw 100 recipes and ordered this. One of the best features of this book is the trouble shooting sections that tell you why the mug overflowed, why it turned out dry, etc. I also liked the substitution section especially when it came to artificial sugars being defined. There are so many recipes, it will be fun to try a new one every day if you like cake. I like the mug books as they are just right for one or two people.

I love this book. It is just me and my hubby at home, all children grown and gone. This is an easy way to make a treat for us without making a huge cake that will either go bad or we feel we need to eat all at once. It helps me to keep from being tempted by goodies sitting around the house. Just enough work that often I will forego it and not ruin my diet, but if I am really craving something I can make it quickly too. It really saves the house from heating up in the summer using the oven. There are TONS of recipes in here, you wouldnt believe what you can make in a mug or a bowl.

"Tap is America's great contribution to dance, and Brian Seibert's book gives us--at last!--a full-scale (and lively) history of its roots, its development, and its glorious achievements. An essential book!"--Robert Gottlieb, dance critic for The New York Observer and editor of Reading Dance "Brian Seibert's What the Eye Hears not only tells you all you wanted to know about tap dancing; it tells you what you never realized you needed to know. Drawing on his massive research, Seibert follows the art through its roots, its vaudeville heyday, its forays onto Broadway and into Hollywood, its decline, its renaissance, and its dissemination beyond American shores. And he recounts all this in an easygoing style, providing vibrant descriptions of the dancing itself and illuminating commentary by those masters who could make a floor sing."--Deborah Jowitt, author of Jerome Robbins: His Life, His Theater, His Dance and Time and the Dancing Image

This book is a masterful history of tap. He weaves together so much: the roots of dances from slavery in America, Irish clubbing, early Blackface minstrel shows, actual Black minstrel shows and a whole array of dancers. He focuses on the art of Henri Cole, the Nicolas brothers, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Gregory Hines and Savion Glover and many, many others. Seibert is a dance critic for the New York Times and "What the Eye Hears" reflects that fact. Astaire and Rogers remain at the pinnacle. Gene Kelly not so much. He seems taken back by Glover, greatness mixed with - at times - a bad attitude. He lauds what is available on YouTube, as I sit back and watch perfection -- Astaire and Powell tapping to Cole Potter's "Begin the Beguine." For anyone who loves dance, this book is an essential. One other plus: the photographs are amazing.

What the Eye Hears: a History of Tap Dancing by Brian Seibert (2015, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, hard bound, 624 pages with photos: $23Fascinating, well-written fun (and jargon-free), Seibert’s definitive history and informed consideration about percussive dance offers more than its subtitle promises. Percussive dance found stages in minstrelsy, revue, vaudeville, jazz clubs, musical comedy, movies and television; in writing about tap, Brian Seibert places it within social history and show business. And much of what he tells us as a fellow tapper, dance reviewer and chronicler is not only how the eye hears but how we who attend dance respond to what we see and hear as our muscles and tendons contract, expand and nearly stomp and soar. In my opinion, this book is also a caution to those who are merely academic theorists: if you can’t do it, don’t know it in your bones and heart: don’t try to write about it.What the Eye Hears is one big bargain of a book, in quality and quantity. I would not be surprised to find the publishers raising the price following this initial offering.Frank Cullen; co-founder of American Vaudeville Museum; author of Vaudeville,Old & New: an Encyclopedia of Variety Performers in America

A much welcomed addition to the still scant historical literature on tap dance. Seibert is not only a dance critic but is a tap dancer himself. He has not only immersed himself in the art's history but is able to apply his own critical insight to those developments in the form that he has witnessed.

A big book. I assumed in 600 or so pages that a book about tap dance would have clattered on and on about Gene Kelly, but no. Kelly gets scant mention and -- guess what? -- Brian Seibert is right. It was an eye opener. This book is populated by long lost names and talents. Do yourself a favor, read the book with YOUTUBE close by. There are snippets all over of these great folks (Peg Leg Bates -- yes, a one-legged tap dancer who started before radio and was still dancing on the Ed Sullivan and Dean Martin shows).I am thrilled to have gone through this book, glad to have seen my eyes open to the real history of tap

I am only half way through this book and I'd thought I'd take a break and write a short review. What the Eye Hears is an astonishing work of scholarship and even better a remarkably entertaining read. More importantly it's a timely piece of scholarship that brings perspective to not only the art of tap, but to how oppressed people blend their cultures through the language of art...in this case tap dancing. On one level Seibert is telling us the untold story of America, a theme I did not expect to find in a book about tap dancing. This book isn't a fog of facts so don't be put off by its length. It's a good read, full of humor, joy and triumph. This is one book I'll read twice.

I've just started the book, so it's a bit early to give an overall rating, but I like it so far and loved learning about the shim sham. It may be the "national anthem of tap dancing" as the author says but I hadn't heard of it before. Went on Youtube and am starting to learn it.

This is a masterpiece but an easy read for it really is the encyclopedia of the history of tap dancing. Makes you want to watch old tap dance movies and get yourself up and tap.

Great gift for the tapper who likes to know their history.Well written.
