O'Reilly has become the de facto for techie books. They are immensely helpful when you just want to dig your feet in and get hardcore with coding. They make for easy reads. Examples are practical and clear.I find this book to be a great reference tool when working on the Unix command line in the Bash Shell environment. I highly recommend this book if not for reading purposes but as an excellent source of feedback if you are not sure what commands you should be using.Whilst you do have manpages, which are often handy, this book brings you clarity and elaboration when coding may not come to you that easy as it does for others. Learn Bash without bashing your skull on the keyboard in frustration.

You want to learn Bash, use it, read man pages, whatever. If Bash is the shell you chose, maybe you don't need a book because you can learn what you need at the terminal. I like this book because sometimes I don't have a terminal in front of me, like when I'm sitting on the bus in the morning. So I have this book with me, and I read a few pages rather than stare out the window. It's cheap, so what the heck, if you are a Bash user and feel like there's more to learn then grab it.

This is a useful introduction to the Bash shell used in unix, linux, and other *nix type operating systems. It takes you from a very basic introduction into deeper concepts including shell scripting and customization. Highly recommended for the niche market it is intended to reach. I found it clear, useful and detailed without being dull.

Anything I've purchased by O'Reilly is the best stuff on Unix and Unix tools! This book helped me write a bash script that is being used by hundreds where I work.

I've told myself to get a book about bash so many times in the past that my Goodread`s Want to Read shelf was getting boringly monothematic. Last month I planned to get my hands on bash Cookbook but a comment on Amazon convinced me to dedicate my time to this title instead. To make it short, I'm not exactly enthusiast: some (just some!) parts were interesting; others (most!) were overly detailed and accompanied with complicated examples, a pain to get through.This is a book that clearly targets beginners, people with close to no experience with Linux and the bash shell. If you work on a daily basis with the penguin, you better move along.Ok so, let's imagine I recently moved from Windows to Linux and I want to explore what the bash shell offers me. What do I get off these 300 pages? Well, the book is divided in 3 parts: Very basic shell features. Basic shell scripting. Basic shell features.The first part, which covers the first three chapters, tells you about basic commands, such as "ls" and all the arguments it swallows. Unless you have never opened the terminal before, you might want to skip these pages.Next the authors introduce some basic shell scripting, starting from variable naming to arrays and flow control. This was, by far, the most interesting part of the whole book in my opinion, but still, the author has covered only the very basics. What I've found particularly annoying was the choice to list all the possible options available just to find out, later, that the book wasn't about system programming so that they would have not been explained.Finally, we leave the magic world of scripting and get introduced to other basic features, such as jobs: background foreground, handling signals.Throughout the book the authors use an example that gets improved as they introduce new concepts. This gets early out of control in my opinion: it's overly hard to follow, mainly for a beginner. A very annoying thing of this example is the fact that the authors names variables, functions and files using Alice in Wonderland: Alice, the Hatter, ... for real?Other examples are found in the book. They are short ad hoc code snippets found next to some command just explained. I've often ended up either using man or googling to find more.I don't really suggest the title, neither to those new to the bash shell, nor to those that are merely interested in scripting. Bash has become the shell script programming choice for most Unix and Linux shell programmers, because of its strengths over C shell (Csh) and other Unix-based Shell environments as a fairly robust freeware script programming language.Strengths of the publication are the clear explanations of the bash shell programming environment, the effective use of tables to summarize basic shell language and programming constructs, UNIX-based utilities, shell environment customization, shell Syntax, Bash File Operators and control key definitions.A chapter is devoted to edit mode capabilities (both eMacs and Vi Command-Line Editing Commands are covered and summarized effectively in clearly doucmented tables).The book contains a number of terse script programming tasks, which provide clear examples of the material presented in the text. These program examples are reworked to provide a clear example of how Bash scripts can be modified to provide greater flexibility and reusability of Bash shell program code.I would like to see more robust programming shell examples in the book as examples of mini-applications, which Bash is frequently used for in many Unix-based or Unix-derived platforms. The "Task 5-1" program example is an example where a good example of a program, which does an adequate job of clearly covering the use of Bash File Operators, yet the author(s) make the statement that the code is "relatively long winded".Another area the book could address is the use of Bash in a Windows environment. I was able to port some of the programming tasks presented to a Windows 95/98 environment using the GNU Bash Version 2.03 for Windows package available on the internet.Despite these drawbacks, I rate the book four stars on the strengths that it is the only readily-available publication, which is solely devoted to Bash shell use and programming. The O'Reilly publication is definitely worth the investment, if you are looking for a book to get you started on Bash Shell Script programming on a Unix, Linux or Windows (to a limited degree) environment.

A wonderful pictorial narrative of an American family. Although of everyday life, the pictures manage to touch the viewer profoundly and express emotions that words cannot. Pam Spaulding has captured the true essence of the value of family.

I live in the city where this photographer has worked for more than 30 years and bought the book after seeing a preview in the Courier-Journal. I think everyone will find certain photos that resonate; I loved the photos of young grandparents with their young grandkids, juxtaposed with photos of the same kids as young adults, having transitioned to the role of providing support and encouragement for an elderly relative. Ms. Spaulding captures other moments I could relate to--from the teenager's first time in a new car to the loss of the family pet. And if your Dad every stayed up late assembling your Christmas present, he'll love this book.I do wonder how this family's behavior might have been influenced by having a journalist around to record private moments. If it was, the results seem positive.

An absolutely amazing journey. Read the articles about individual family members—completely worth your time.It makes me sad that this book is out of print now.

Starting in 1977 after the birth of the couple's first baby and continuing until 2007, this book contains a selection of photos from this timeframe--allowing you to literally watch the family grow up before your eyes. Although there is some text in the book, the majority of the book consists of full-page black and white photos, often with photos from two different decades facing each other.Brief Thoughts: This book was just fascinating, and once I started paging through it, I couldn't stop. It was also interesting to learn how this project grew and developed and to hear from both parties how the relationship grew and evolved.

Ahmed's introduction to her new environment is shocking. Her first patient is an elderly Bedouin woman. Though naked on the operating table, she still is required by custom to have her face concealed with a veil under which numerous hoses snake their way to hissing machines. Everyday life is laced with bizarre situations created by the rabid puritanical orthodoxy that among other requirements forbids women to wear seat belts because it results in their breasts being more defined, and oppresses Saudi men as much as women by its archaic rules. At times the narrative is burdened with Ahmed's descriptions of the physical characteristics of individuals and the luxurious adornments of their homes but this minor flaw is easily overlooked in exchange for the intimate introduction to a world most readers will never know. This is a book club selection that I must read. It is a tough go just because it is a disturbing topic. To think that women are treated as a bunch of 'black bundles' all sitting together in the airport...it is just too disturbing. I did learn much that should be given a wider distribution. I did not know that until the 1970's women in Saudi Arabia had all manner of privileges. It was the Saudi royal family's fear that the Wahabi sect could sieze their power that caused a pandering to the 'dark side' that covered women in black polyester and began their dreadful treatment. This pandering to the extremists has been the cause of so much of the destruction in that part of the world. May we all learn from that lesson.

I read this book not so much to learn about Dr. Qanta Ahmed's experience, but to recall my own. I wanted to say, "Yes! Yes! That's the way it was!" at every turn of the page, and I was able to do so. Her descriptions of sights, scents, sounds, clothing, surroundings and people are spot-on accurate. Perhaps I might have found those details excessive, had I not lived in Riyadh for twelve years, worked in a hospital, and experienced much of what she experienced. Her narrative portrays objective truth, for her and for me and for many women like us-- Westernized Muslims who have lived and worked in a Riyadh hospital during the 1980s and 90s.It also portrays an internal truth that rings true for me. In many ways, her story is an ordinary story, in that she progressed through the same adjustments we all experienced during our stay in Riyadh, yet nothing in Riyadh was ordinary. We single women who formed an esoteric group of medical professionals, both expatriate and Arab, shared a path-- a wonderful, exciting path that is portrayed beautifully in this book.A single woman could hardly spend any time in Riyadh without enduring her own Muttawa story, the elements of which are identical for all us us, though the details differ. We did not ride in cars too many times before being pursued by eager males, who sometimes latched onto our vehicles and didn't give up until our nervous drivers reached our combination havens/prisons behind gates and guards.We endured the uncertainty and confusion of how to relate to male colleagues from different areas of the world. We often fell in love with one or more of them. The term "Riyadh Romance" carried a specific meaning, referring to an attraction that blossomed there, but maybe withered when transplanted.We could hardly seek to understand anything without making peace with wearing the the abaya, and discovering that it, along with the scarf and sometimes face veil, let us glide comfortably through the same spaces our uncovered colleagues found awkward.We discovered the depths of emotion, talent, and ambition present in women who previously seemed insipid under their black wraps. We entered the lush world of Saudi femininity and saw-- literally-- what men are not allowed to see. I cannot imagine that this book could disappoint anyone who holds even a superficial interest in memoir, East-West relations, Islam, Saudi Arabia, or the expatriate experience in Riyadh.

This book is full of information. I thought that Saudi Arabia was like all the other Muslim countries but this book taught me that it has its very own Wahabi interpretation of Islam. The Saudis LIVE their religion, referring constantly to Allah and quoting the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Of course the oppression of women and these horrible, offensive, undignified abbayas and the harsh disciplinarian police are something I just cannot fathom.Although I am an atheist I understood the author's emotional and spiritual attraction to Hajj. Qanta Ahmed also shows that - like everywhere else in the world alas - there is discrimination between "pure Saudi" and other muslims as well as huge class distinctions even at Mecca, where the rich pilgrims pray in relative comfort whereas the poor have none. There are also descriptions of "vegas" like decorations in the houses ofthe very rich, the hugely expensive cars the men drive recklessly.The relationship between men and women, even in a working place like the hospital where Dr. Ahmed was a lung specialist and where she was in constant contact with male colleagues, was impossible because of the prevailing culture.This is a fantastic book written in a way that makes the reader understand a culture so different from the western. I wish more books like that were written.

Sometimes this book frustrated me. For instance, when the narrator didn't do research on Saudi culture before moving there from NYC, because she thought being Muslim was all she needed to fit in. (For instance, she waited until she was on the plane to check if her outfit was appropriate.) The would be like me saying I don't need to do research before moving to North Korea, because I'm an atheist, so it'll all be fine.Still, this was a fascinating book, and I truly enjoyed this glimpse into an exotic, distinctly foreign way of life. The Saudi obsession with gender segregation gave me food for thought, especially with all the current talk of sexual harassment in the workplace in the US. It's interesting to compare and contrast how these different cultures go about regulating sex and sexuality, and the consequences of each strategy.Saudi Arabia seems like a pretty grim, joyless place to live, and I'm glad the author went there and wrote about it, so I can learn about it without having to go there.Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning more about Saudi Arabia.

I've been programming for about three years now, and have picked up a few different languages in that time, including Python and Java. I didn't study Computer Science in college however, so although I knew how to write code to perform certain tasks I didn't truly understand how that code was ultimately being executed on my computer. My curiosity eventually led me to purchasing this book and I am extremely happy with that decision. Going all the way from simple logic gates to writing a compiler and standard library for your own programming language this book explains, in a very approachable way, how the code in the high level languages people write in is translated into machine code and run on hardware. I now feel I understand how all the pieces in this chain work, if only at a high level. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who may not have a thorough computer science background but is familiar and interested in programming languages.

I'm hoping and praying these authors do a new edition, but in the meantime, they have been beyond ethical in keeping the web resources up to date, even at this writing. Way beyond that really, because the material on the web is SO much more than "supplemental" -- it includes the entire text, .pdf lessons, and if you're an autodidact or teacher, complete teaching materials! If you check out the wonderful Amazon "look inside" feature, you'll see an out of date website, but it still forwards to the new site (the old one is the ldc dot ac, the new one is nand2tetris dot org). The nand2 is a symbol for the fact that you can start all the way from a nand gate and build your virtual machine to run your own programmed tetris game!For Raspberry and Arduino (or Propeller) buffs like me, although this project is all virtual (no physical circuits), the authors have taken nearly 10 years to perfect the sim interfaces to make the experience far more complete than even building a PC from components, or hacking with our favorite chips and boards. This book is the PC version of the now famous Max Maxfield books that teach us to build a virtual calculator (Bebop to the Boolean Boogie, Third Edition: An Unconventional Guide to Electronics AND The Definitive Guide to How Computers Do Math : Featuring the Virtual DIY Calculator).Frankly it's rare to see authors not only spend this much time on support, then keep it going years later! They also get five stars on textextras dot com for their commitment to keeping the text current. Highly recommended for both classes and self study. Although one 11 year old has built one with help, I'd put this at teen to postgrad. I know, quite a range, but it IS that good.

I wanted to learn some programming languages and concepts to make my Technical Writer resume meatier. Problem was, any attempt to learn Python, SOAP, or MySQL just lead me to ask a million questions about how this stuff actually worked beneath the straightforward, high-level application stack: How does this code interact with the OS? How do lines of text get turned into binary instructions? How does all this abstract graphics, text, and data actually meet up with electrical signals and semiconductors? It has to at some point, right? It's not magic, right? (And so on).I grabbed this book because working from the bottom up, from NAND gates to a functional OS, sounded like the best process to learn. I'm on Chapter 6 right now (about half way through the book), and I know I've made the right choice. The best part of this course is that you actually build every single layer of the computer architecture using their free suite of visualization tools. This means that, every time you start a new chapter and take the next step up the ladder of the computer hierarchy to the place you actually live in (i.e. an operating system with a graphical user interface), you understand exactly why you're building what you're building--and how exactly it relates to all the layers beneath it.I'm not a mathematics guy (I spent seven years in college studying literature; hence why I need this book!), but with some perseverance, several hours spent with a constantly furrowed brow, and a not insignificant amount of cursing, I've been able to puzzle through every single one of the tasks set out by the book so far. If you have some natural curiosity and critical thinking skills, you'll be able to get through this book no matter how non-technical your background is. What's especially helpful is that there are resources outside the book itself: The online forums for this book are (as of April 2014) very active, and you can either wait a day or two to have an expert look at your code and see all the various ways you're screwing up, or you can search to see if your particular question has already been answered (it usually has).It's not all wine and roses, of course. The UI of the software suite is pretty rough, with a few apparent bugs (I'm using them in a Mac OS, so that might be the root of some of the problems). Also, the hardware description language (HDL) you use in the first half of the book often seems unnecessarily finicky (I hope you didn't put "and" instead of "And" somewhere in your 100 lines of code...). And, though the book mostly follows a path straight up the latter of abstraction, Chapter 4 jumps up to the software (assembly code) level, then follows with Chapter 5, which drops back down into the hardware of the CPU and memory. This structure actually kind of makes sense once you get through both of these chapters (there may be no other way to do it, now that I think about it), but it's pretty disorienting trying to get through the lower layers of software when the hardware is still sitting around in pieces, only half explained. Some context/additional explanation at the beginning of Chapter 4 would have helped with this.Also note that, when you hit Chapter 6, you'll need some prerequisite high-level coding/scripting experience. It doesn't really matter what language you know; you just need to know one. If you're completely new to coding, I would recommend learning some Python via Codecademy; it'll probably be a month or two detour from the book (depending on how fast you work), but it'll be worth it.In summary, I can't think of a more efficient way to get a thorough overview of Computer Science than this book. Any shorter of an explanation won't really make sense; any more in-depth of an explanation would probably lose everybody but the people getting college degrees in this stuff. For new students to the field, or for amateurs with an interest, this book hits the sweet spot.

My 7 year old first grader loves the Explode the Code series. I like that the activities repeat and she does too. Looking at the books, they aren't colorful and don't seem appealing to kids, but they are!I skip around the book when needed. I love that there is a book between 3 and 4. Just what we need!

Explode the Code 3 1/2 is exactly what it says it is - more review on the material presented in #3. My grandson is autistic and needed the extra practice, so it is great for him. If your child has easily mastered Explode #3, order #4 instead of 3 1/2.As usual, Explode the Code does a great job of incrementally focusing on the many steps that help children (and adults!) crack the code of the English language.

Explode the Code is a great phonic series. I have used these with students up to 3rd grade and even some low 4th graders and the improvement I see in their reading is amazing! It's self-explanatory and easy to use.

I have been using the Explode the Code series of workbooks for years and it's an EXCELLENT series! I have six children and have been homeschooling for 17 years. Unfortunately, I only discovered this series about five years ago, so I've only been able to use it with my two youngest. I wish I could have used it for all my children. It really teaches them to think and uses picture clues to strengthen their reading comprehension. It is one of the best products that I have run across and my kids love it, too. There are no lessons or explanations necessary. You just pick it up and start learning as you go.

We have used all Explode the Cod books for Phonics and love them. My 5 year old spells so well thanks to these books. I recommend them to anyone homeschooling.

A sturdy colorful board book that gives a positive peek at the perks of being a big sibling, this book is just what i was hoping for. It is not a direct adaptation of the corresponding episodes of the show but it hits all the same major points. It reads more like a day in the life of Daniel as a big brother. It could also stand alone for those that aren't familiar with the characters but want an uplifting sibling book. It does not focus on negative sibling interaction like some do, but instead boosts confidence by talking about how baby's nap can be special time for the rest of the family.

Our toddler (2.5 years old) is a big Daniel fan so he liked this. It's a bit repetitive at times which is annoying for the parents, but obviously toddlers don't care. Practically every page starts with, "You can be a big helper in your family". Baby Margaret takes a bottle, so if you plan to nurse there's nothing in here for that. I'm not sure I would recommend this to a kid who has never seen Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. Overall a very cute feel good message about being a "big helper".

I got this book, along with a few others, for my 3 yo son when my daughter was born. He liked this one the best. He seemed to really relate to Daniel Tiger, and he wanted to help just like Daniel Tiger did.

I bought this for my 2 year old son ahead the arrival of baby number 2. He enjoys the book and the subject mater is very age appropriate. It teaches him the ways he can help with the new baby. I like the approach as it encourages the older child to participate in the daily tasks of caring for the baby.

My son loves this book and wants to read it frequently. I think it does an excellent job explaining the idea of a new sibling. It helps to make the idea fun and give a sense of being involved in the process instead of just feeling left out because there is a new little one around. I recommend this book for any new big brothers!

My son has been a huge fan of Daniel Tiger ever since he started watching TV. I purchased this book for his 2nd birthday while I was expecting his sister. We read it almost every night leading up to her birth and I swear it helped prepare him for the changes.

This is an adorable story that helps explain what the home will be like once baby arrives. It tells about helping out as a sibling and that mom and dad will still have special time for the older child too!! Daniel tiger is a wonderful show and the concepts are always on point!!

My son loves this book so much! I think because it's repetitive with the whole "you can be a big helper in your family" thing, it caught on really fast with him. Now he asks to read this book every night and calls himself a big helper like Daniel!
