I have purchased one of these boxed calendars every year for a number of years. This one really stretches the brain. Although I usually can only solve about half of them, I keep trying and learning. I may not be MENSA material, but am fascinated with puzzles that are a bit "out of my reach"!

I bought this calendar because my usual puzzle calendar was tragically out of stock (my fault for waiting so long). My usual puzzle calendar is full of logic puzzles and brain teasers that anyone can solve using logic and problem solving skills. This calendar however, has been a major disappointment. You can't just solve these puzzles with logic; almost all of them require extra knowledge that the average person may not have in order to solve. In one puzzle, I was expected to know the name of "an 18th century poet" in order to get the answer right; I don't know the names of any poets, let alone the one they were hinting at. Another time I was expected to know a series of songs from the 90's in order to get the puzzle right. Other puzzles require specific math skills in order to solve them (many of us know algebra, but if you're rusty in any of these math structures you're screwed) as well. Using logic or problem solving skills are only half the battle with these puzzles. You have to know history, pop culture, and various other factoids as well in order to solve them, which is totally not what I wanted. Also, you're going to need a verbose understanding of the English language in order to solve the word puzzles; they often use obscure or weird words in order to make it more challenging (so if you know English as a second language, you may want to stay away!). I just wanted logic puzzles and brain teasers, and this product does NOT offer that. If you're someone who knows a lot of random stuff and reads wikipedia for fun, and is a math whizz, you may enjoy this product. I am neither of those things and therefore was bitterly disappointed in this product. Nowadays I don't even bother with the puzzle and I just use it as a regular calendar. Such a waste of money.

These daily calendars are great. I give my husband the book lovers one every year, which is his favorite Christmas gift. Last year I got myself the art one (loved it) and this year I gave an art one to my friend who raved about it. They are the "gift that keeps on giving" every day for a year! So this time I decided to challenge myself a little every day, especially since I think I'm so smart. So, we'll see. So far I have worked through the first half of January because once I got started they were kind of fun. One was annoying so I quit. I would imagine if you are a person who is not so good at unscrambling words or so sudoku-type puzzles or word meanings or logic, that you might find it more frustrating than fun. But if you enjoy a challenge and want to stay sharp, I suppose this could help. It used to be said that one should do crossword puzzles to stay sharp, but then after a time the research showed that people who did them only became good at doing crosswords and it really did not help overall. Supposedly mixing it up helps. Cross your fingers.

Everyone at home or those who visit loves to solve these puzzles. Some are math oriented, some are vocabulary oriented and some are just clever codes to decipher. Bought this for 2017 and already needed this new one for my household and to give as gifts!

Well I should give it a five star because they are definitely brain puzzles but seriously. I don't even look forward to the next one because they are so hard! Just say a few brain puzzle and mostly math trivia. Just not as happy with it as I was hoping to be. Wish it was not too hard to even attempt. Not fun at all.

I bought this one before when I started struggling to remember the simplest things (where I sat things down mostly- keys, my phone, anything I picked up that is small). Most of the puzzles are hard to solve, but after I get started with a few, it get easier. It also really improved my memory. Lastly, I keep it at my desk at work. It is perfect for a mental break and appears to help me lower stress.

I enjoy these puzzle calendars, and receive one each year as a gift. This year's version, however, seems inferior to years past. The puzzles are not as clever or challenging and the instructions are less adequate. Some puzzles have multiple solutions. I still enjoy doing them, but they are not as enjoyable this year. Also, I wish there was a month-view on each page.

A nice variety of puzzles--different ones this year as opposed to previous years. I was dissatisfied with the 2017 puzzles which needed editing in some cases, so did not order the 2018 puzzles until March of this year--when I realized I couldn't live without them!

The newest edition is 100 pages smaller than the 2008 edition. The maps have deleted much info, places to stay are extremely limited -they have deleted many choices and there events are listed which haven't been in 5 years. I was Peace Corps in Jam 2010-2012 and the 2008 edition was our bible for the island. The new one isn't worth the money-buy the 2008 edition, yes the prices stated are out of date but there is much more info. I was in country during 2014 LP editor revisit, had contacted LP main office to inform them of new attractions but it was for naught, they never even went there.New is a waste of money, it is a rehash without verification, yes there is some new stuff which is accurate but it is far between. Purchase Old

No pictures, extremely basic maps. You would be better off just searching online-this is a waste. It has very basic information while missing on giving more in depth information on certain sites/trip plans. this would be good if you wanted a handful of hotels, restaurants in various areas.

This is a very good book to use to explore Jamaica.

Great book although they should really think about using a waterproof paper like TerraSlate Paper for their books. Then there would be no more wet pages and it would be so easy to just throw in your bag. Just a thought!

The game of soccer, or football as it’s more commonly known, was just a little game during the 1800s. Popular, yes, but not wildly so. Just two countries, Scotland and England, “faced off for the world’s first international match in 1872.” The British had a hand-selected team of seasoned players while Scotland’s were from a single club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the match, which had a “crowd of 4,000 fans” cheering on their respective teams who were playing on a muddy field. Despite the seemingly mismatched teams, the “first international soccer match ended in a scoreless tie.” It wouldn’t be the end of international competition, but rather the beginning.By the early 1900s soccer definitely proved to be a high-interest international sport. As with anything, soccer “needed a common governing body to oversee international competition.” It was in Europe that saw the birth of the “Féderation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA),” an association that grew both in scope and power over the decades. FIFA’s influence was strong from the beginning, but the World Cup tournaments were not held consistently, especially during the World Wars and the Great Depression. Well first of all I am way behind on my work and life because I couldn't put this down. The Arthurian legend is, well, legendary so I was both excited and nervous about Once and Future. It exceeded my expectations. McCarthy and Capetta manage to find that perfect balance between the story we're all familiar with and new elements to make it their own. Merlin is amazing in this version (I mean, the guy hums K-pop). I really love the diversity of characters. Readers of all sexualities, genders, orientations and melanin will find themselves represented here, and in a way that is not "about" being ace or fluid or straight or whatever--that's just one aspect of the character that is basically as mundane and routine as having brown eyes or being taller than everyone else. Once and Future broke my heart over and over as it filled me with hope and joy and made me laugh. The ending was both satisfying and a cliffhanger for the next book. Can there be like 10 more of these? Fans of Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles will feel particularly at home here.

Holy bananas, this book is swallowing me whole. I haven't even finished it yet (edited--now that I've finished it, I'll have a bit to say about the ending), but I can't wait another minute to start screaming and fangirling. If you are or ever have been a queer teen, if you are a POC (or a white person who feels better, safer and happier in a universe where racial equality is the status quo); if you love hero epics, marvel movies, social justice, and fully realized female, queer, and nonbinary characters, you are going to FLIP OUT. The world (well, universe) the authors have created is one you will fall into head-first. I honestly haven't been this deeply gripped by a book in a long, long time. Like, staying up reading until 2am even though I know I have to wake up at 5:30, kind of gripping. It's such an amazing gift to get a queer, brown teenage girl as the star of this kind of massively epic hero quest (a retelling of the King Arthur story set in the quasi-distant future, in the style of Firefly--it's outer space, yeah, but still just humanity plundering every resource available; no aliens here). I love that hardly anybody is straight, and hardly anybody is white. I'm pretty sure there's only one character who is straight AND white--and even he makes it clear that he doesn't feel any sense of entitlement based on these arbitrary factors. This really is a universe where social power structures have nothing to do with race, gender or sexuality. Of course, even that awesome feat on its own wouldn't make a story worth reading, and it could even come off as preachy or soapboxy in the wrong hands. But, y'all, this story. This story will make you, too, forget the need for sleep while reading. Ari Helix is the kind of hero I can actually relate to; it's shockingly easy to see the world through her eyes, and by doing so, feel those heroic, evil-corporation-destroying feelings like they're your own. Her love story with her "Gwenivere" is beautiful and heart-wrenching and so, so hot. There are plenty of other characters of course, and they are all complex and engaging and important (especially Merlin, who has witnessed the rise and fall of thousands of years of human history only to find himself a teenage boy for the first time in his ancient life, and little clue about how to handle his hormones). The camradierie of the group is also a huge and beautiful part of the story. But Ari is the key to it all, and she's here for it.So now that I've finished it, I have to say I wasn't thrilled with the ending. The pacing felt really rushed, the characterization of "the masses" in this universe felt really underdeveloped. I had been expecting rallying the people to be a bigger part of how Ari would lead the revolution. And without giving any spoilers, I can only say that the way to defeat a giant, universe-monopolizing corporation can't be whittled down to taking on a single figurehead. I really don't know how much more I can say without giving spoilers, but for me there were also some holes in the way things were left in the brief aftermath of the grand climax, concerning where and how literally ALL the means of production in the universe were happening. It sort of seemed like the whole ending was a rush to set up the sequel.That said, I will still absolutely read the sequel, and I would LOVE to see this get made into a movie too, it's a highly visual and action-filled narrative. I'm still giving it a 5 star rating. If there was a 4.5 option I'd do that, but since there's not I'm sticking with 5, for all the wonderful things that kept me up all night reading, and all the radically game-changing representation of diversity of race, sexuality and gender. Bottom line is the love for the characters, and as long as they keep having adventures, I'll keep reading.

It's one of those books you walk away from thinking, "I loved all the things Capetta and McCarthy did in this story: combining diverse characters, a gender bent King Arthur, and spaceships". And so for these aspects alone it deserves these stars.

So then what happens when you make the legend a reincarnation story where Arthur is tasked with uniting all of mankind under one banner, but somehow failing each time.Except this time, Arthur has been reincarnated into the body of Ari, a young woman in the future, who pulls Excalibur out of an aged oak tree on what is now called Old Earth, and needs to defeat the tyrannical Mercer Company who has a monopoly on pretty much the entire galaxy and forces people to follow their laws and their rules lest they will cut you planet off from the rest of civilization with a barrier. And helping each Arthur on each quest is Merlin who has been progressively aging backwards with this cycle (#42) finding himself a teenager with a penchant of singing a pop song before conjuring his magic?(Takes imaginary breath).Well, you’d have Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy’s Once & Future.If you can’t tell, the premise is attention grabbing. With all the retellings out there, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a gender-swapped retelling of the Arthurian legend in space. So right away it piqued my interest.Once & Future has a lot going for it. First and foremost, the diversity and representation is fantastic. Capetta and McCarthy take all the stigmas that are still prevalent today, in regards to gender and identity, and make them a thing of the past. It doesn’t feel like something being forced or check-marked into the story either. It feels honest and refreshing and what we can only hope the world will embrace more in the present.I also enjoyed how the ties formed between the original Arthurian Legend is utilized as a stepping stone for Ari’s story, but how she continues to subvert everything that Merlin has come to expect in each cycle. Most obvious being that this time Arthur is female. It’s these places that make the story the strongest and works the best. And if I’m being honest I feel like that’s the way it should be because, clearly, this cycle is different, this cycle has the potential to see all the steps through to the very end—to the uniting of humankind—it needed to be different from what’s already been.However, when the story follows too closely the path set forth in the original Legend—calling out the Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot love triangle—is when it fell into too much melodrama for me. Granted no one has ever said that Arthurian Legend isn’t made of drama, but the problem is that everything felt rushed. I didn’t get to feel the heartbreak because in the blink of an eye we go from an intense attraction, complete with promising backstory, between Gwen and Ari to marriage to heartbreak. Merlin and one of Ari’s knights, Val, find themselves in a similar state of attraction, but I found their relationship a much better slow burn.This is true for the friendships as well. I loved the interactions between a thoroughly futuristically modern Ari and a centuries old, sometimes stodgy Merlin. Set in his ways and secure in his tasks, Ari throws him for a loop and brings him out of his shell a bit. Ari starts the story off as a fugitive refugee and with Merlin’s influence becomes the face of a revolution. I wanted to see more of the build up from tentative associates to genuine friends.Overall, Once & Future is an ambitious retelling, auspicious in scope and execution. The adventure clearly isn’t over for Ari and her knights, and I’m interested to see what they bring to the table next.

It is the second book in Cirque Americain young adult book and comic book series, but somewhat stands on its own without having to read the first book in the series, Girl on a Wire. I had not read the first book. I say somewhat in that there are parts of the first book that form a basis and back story of Girl in the Shadow. However, the Girl in the Shadow is its own story about a girl joining the circus striving to be one of the first few women practicing stage magic (I loved how she incorporated woman magicians of the past into her act as her inspiration). Of course, the stage magic also crosses over into the world of mystical magic, charms, and magical families. The book does start slowly and the back story from the first book kept making me wonder if I should read the first book beforehand. However, it started to speed up and get mushy romantic a third into the book so I continued on then got hooked halfway through to where I had to finish. Overall, a enjoyable read but I think I will need to pick up the first book to help fill in a few blanks.

Set in a circus world called Cirque American this is a story about an 18 year old young woman named Moira who is a frustrated want to be Magician. Her father is a renowned Magician and she wants to follow in his footsteps. For his own reasons he refuses to allow her to, so she practices on her own time and in secret. She finally tries to step out of his Shadow only to have him refuse to even see what she is capable of doing. So she sets out on her own path not telling him of her plans. In the process she learns things about herself.This is a compelling coming of age story of a young woman who has to learn to trust herself in order to reach her potential.I'm a big comic book reader so I couldn't help but think of Zatanna Zatara, a magician in the DC universe. There was a moment in the book where these two worlds collided which made me smile.This is book 2 in the Cirque American story. The first book Girl on a Wire was a big hit with my teenage daughter so we were looking forward to this one. This is not a sequel however. Moira is a new addition to this universe but we see familiar characters. One doesn't have to have read the first to read this although reading Girl on a Wire will give texture to the story.For those who want to read more about Jules and Remy from Girl on a Wire? There is a four issue comic book mini series entitled Girl Over Paris currently in progress.I found this book to be extremely charming.

A fun story with themes of girl power, rebellion, and honesty. I can't think of much to say about it right now except that I was never bored, and it wasn't all predictable, which was great. It's got both magic and "magic", so if you like a twist on your love stories (or if you'd like to learn a few things about how magicians pull off their tricks, or what some major female magicians were best known for), you should definitely read this book.Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

First I'd like to state that I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. I had read the mixed reviews and was a bit nervous. First this being a second book in a series and second being the fact that others didn't seem to love it. Well I really liked this book. Don't get me wrong the first few chapters were boring and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. However once Moira gets to Cirque American I was hooked. I couldn't put this kindle book down. I literally read the book in one day. Give it a shot you won't be disappointed.

A real page turner that kept me up way past my bed time. It brings back folks from her previous book, but introduces new and compelling people. A young woman desires to be a magician, but discovers that there is more to the magic life than she realized.It keeps the reader on the edge of her seat. Mild violence and no explicit sexual content.

Decent, lightweight reading, but not fully developed. Read very simplistically and the characters were rather two-dimensional. Still, interesting premise and I enjoyed learning a bit more about women in magic and magic techniques.

Moira leaves her famous Vegas magician father to secretly join the circus... She gets caught up in a bid to find a magical coin, meets her long lost mother, and maybe finds love on the way :-) There's adventure, intrigue, magical feats, romance, friendship, and drama.

This book was a great combination of show business, mystery and getting do. I loved it. The character of Moors was of a feisty young woman finding herself. I can't wait to read another Cirque American book.

Jay M. Feinman is Distinguished Professor of Law at Rutgers University School of Law, Camden. He is the bestselling author of six previous books, including Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About American Law and Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It, and more than fifty scholarly articles. If you're into important supreme court decisions that have shaped american history then I highly recommend this book for reading to enjoy. It doesn't get into really deep specifics so this isn't the book if you're trying to use if for a class. But for fun reading its everything you need

Each court decision is prefaced by a few paragraphs (or sometimes pages) of historical context, provided by the book's editors. The decisions themselves are edited to be a concise summary of the main arguments - you won't find the full text of the arguments here - but as an interested lay person, this short but sweet approach is what I'm looking for.I can read and re-read an argument quickly, thanks to the format, and I carry my copy around to have while waiting for the train, meetings, or classes. When I am particularly intrigued by a decision, I can just go online to read more about it.

An impressive collection of writings. The author is successful in providing a textbook worth of information regarding our court system and its history in such a concise measure.

great read, done ell, short and informative

Great book. I used this for my American Government class and it was a great help for papers.

Each case has a little description of the events, the historical context and some comments on the court's decision. Then there's a redacted version of the court's actual language. If I only take one thing away, it's that I thought partisanship played a big role in these decisions but it seems that's not the case. Even when the judges disagree, their arguments are well reasoned and grounded in the constitution as it's written. Makes you appreciate lawmakers and the role of law in our society.

The concise author summaries and editing were outstanding. I thought some cases deserved too be included, such as Kurtzman and Lopez cases. I still recommend it!
