Kaczynski's critique of modern industrial society is brilliant on many fronts, although I find his solution to the problem appallingly utopian and simple minded. Ted asks the question "why are people so miserable in industrial society?" and he comes to many conclusions. One is that we are caught up in what he calls "surrogate activities", which are something like activities "just for the sake of doing something" rather than, say, doing something because we need to in order to survive. An example would be that instead of hunting or fishing in order to be able to eat, we play video games where we hunt and fish just because we have nothing else to do. In other words, we are so saturated with material wealth that we are dying of boredom and therefore waste our time on trivial nonsense.Another issue is that we don't have the ability to go through what he calls "The Power Process". TPP is Ted's term for a psychological need in us to have goals, work towards those goals, achieve them at a reasonable rate, and do so with autonomy. In industrial society much of what we have is so easy to get that we hardly have to work towards them (hence why we engage in so many surrogate activities) and much of what we want is so difficult to get that we end up frustrated because we can't obtain them. Most importantly, however, we have very little autonomy when it comes to major decisions in our life. We can hardly control who gets into office based on our measly vote. Likewise, most of us have very little control over the direction our company is going to take, or what type of education our children are going to receive, or what type of clean air or water we can drink, and etc. So modern man increasingly feels frustrated and powerless, which leads to "feeling of inferiority". We are also "over-socialized" into thinking a certain way (see: political correctness) and thus are brainwashed and/or guilt tripped from a very early age into thinking and saying only what the system tells us to. So what can we do about all of this? Kaczynski tries to argue that we can't do anything to reform this system, and thus we have to overthrow it. I think that is a lazy answer to the problem (and a dangerous one) but obviously Kaczynski was a very resentful, violent man.All in all, Kaczynski illuminates some serious issues that we face as moderns living in this type of society, and I guess it is up to us to figure out a way to reclaim our autonomy and sense of fulfillment in an age where such things are quite difficult indeed. This book is a great read and I recommend it to pretty much anyone who is interested in idea's.

...that the brilliance of this man was wasted on terrorism, violence, and death. This book has many foretelling ideas about today (20 years after being written) and out PC culture, censorship, and general absurdities of today. He asserts how we are actually becoming slaves to the technology that we create and which also over-complicates a lot of simple processes of our life (this being something I can attest to as I grew up during the internet's rapid proliferation into everyday life.)He may have been a madman but, he was incredibly intelligent. I can't add too much insight on this because I haven't read the whole thing yet and well...Amazon reviews is hardly an area where insightful scholarly reviews are needed. You can get this for free online on pdf but I like tangible items (like the neo-luddite I am) so I bought it. It's bound appropriately for what it is and quite lengthy for an essay. Read it...its interesting.

Just got done watching the Netflix series Unibomber and was interested in reading the manifesto. This arrived quickly and is a very good book!

Only extreme liberals and conservatives will not agree with this book. The few objective balanced humans left in America will agree. However, you must have a good concrete knowledge of human history, culture, psychosocial behavior, and have read dystopian novels to understand. If not, you're screwed. Stay scrolling for the next camp out date at best buy for the latest apple computer you can't pay in cash. People also need to have an understanding of the genius thinking and inability to function socially. If you are a full grown adult, who owns or has owned a home, pays lots of taxes, has children and pays for their useless crap, saves for their college not-really-an-education, pays $2000 for family medical plan with a deductible of $5000, you don't sleep, you don't vacation, you barely eat, and you can't save for your old age--then you will fully feel and understand this book. BUY IT and don't judge what has been said about this man. The media is the Antichrist that perpetuates hate and ignorance

If you’ve come this far and are reading reviews, just go for it. You’ll enjoy it, and if not, you will have at least challenged your beliefs in some way and are ready to live a better life. Whether that means sticking to your beliefs even harder or questioning them, I don’t know. But you’ll be happy you read this.

Read this book and see how eerily it applies to today.

One of the most insightful essays in modern American literature. If you can plow through the first half, he brings his arguments together intelligently to compose a persuasive argument and discourse on western civilization.

A deep thinker, a revolutionary thinker, a crazy person.Troubling and profound. Will be reading his pre-terrorism works to see if there were any hints that he was slipping down the rabbit hole.

Review

"The list of legal issues and controversies that bear Dershowitz’s thumbprints is breathtaking. That one man involved himself in the Pentagon Papers case, the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick investigation, Sharansky’s release from a Soviet prison, the O.J. trial, Bush v. Gore, the Mike Tyson rape case, the Woody Allen-Mia Farrow custody dispute, the Julian Assange WikiLeaks investigation and the public debate over Trayvon Martin, reflects not just the breadth of Dershowitz’s experience but also its depth and duration. Love him or hate him, Dershowitz has lived a life that matters, hugely and enduringly. He is a man in full at a time when most of us aspire to be little more than a presence on Twitter." -New York Times Book Review"In 'Taking the Stand,' Dershowitz commands the stage. . . he fills his book to overflowing with fascinating and funny vignettes involving his cases and clients, and probing and provocative insights into contemporary legal controversies, ranging from censorship to civil rights, national security, sexual harassment, rape, abortion, the separation of church and state, and the use of scientific evidence in murder cases.  Whether he is discussing people or policies, he leaves no doubt about where he stands." -Glenn C. Altschuler, The Boston Globe“The problem with writing about Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, of course, is Dershowitz himself. He is impossibly, almost self-consciously annoying. As he writes in his latest book, ‘Taking the Stand,’ he does ‘not hide behind the distorting shield of false humility.’… If Dershowitz isn’t getting in your face about something, it’s as if he’s not doing his job…I love that Dershowitz credits the Classic Comics for his introduction to literature…In an amusing vignette, Woody Allen asks Dershowitz which dead person he might have represented. Dershowitz replies: “Jesus.”…The Mike Tyson material in “Stand” is fascinating, and the Bobby Fisher anecdote alone is worth the $28 cover price…’I’m never satisfied unless I get the last word,’ he writes in ‘[Taking the] Stand.’ Then he provides the text of his letter to the editor, finding fault with the as-yet unpublished, indeed unwritten obituaries that he assumes will herald his passing…We all wish [Dershowitz] a long and healthy life…” –Alex Beam, Boston Globe"Riveting, compelling, touching, and tender." -The Jewish Voice"One of the most high-profile lawyers in America, known for his work on newsworthy cases...raises provocative questions about the many dilemmas in modern American jurisprudence, including those related to the separation of church and state, affirmative action, human rights, and the right to privacy. Dershowitz offers much of interest...” -Publishers Weekly“From beginning to end, this memoir is both entertaining and enlightening. We see a young and inquisitive Dershowitz continually arguing with the authority figures in his early life, never satisfied with the answer, ‘just because’…Dershowitz uses his experiences to relate some very important points: the necessity of civil rights, the proper application reasonably can to help a client.” –Library Journal"One of the most distinguished lawyers of his generation reflects on his life and extraordinary career...The youngest full professor ever at Harvard Law School...more than four decades, he has used this perch to teach, write and speak about the law’s intersections with science and psychiatry and especially about matters pertaining to constitutional and criminal law. Most unusually for a law professor, Dershowitz has maintained a highly active appellate practice, and he narrates...his life in the law through the many cases he’s handled. Many of these unfailingly interesting tales feature high-profile clients like Leona Helmsley, O.J. Simpson, Mike Tyson and Bill Clinton...Dershowitz has become an important voice with an active role in the evolution of American law, touching on an astonishing breadth of issues, including capital punishment, affirmative action, pornography, national security, academic freedom and human rights. An engaging recounting of a life of serious purpose and splendid flair." -Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)“From his experience on the front lines of so many pivotal cases in recent history, Professor Dershowitz made the law real for his students. He effortlessly translated how our most basic philosophical principles are alive and well in the modern justice system. In doing so, he underscored not just a commitment to equity and integrity, but a deep faith in the power of the law to make our country more honest and fair.” – Congressman Joe Kennedy III "I loved this book. If I could trade lives with anyone, Dershowitz would be high on my list, minus the death threats and tchotchkes." -Larry David “Alan Dershowitz’s real life use of science to win murder cases rivals anything on CSI and any other fictional drama.  Cheers for a riveting autobiography.”  -Ted Danson"Alan Dershowitz's autobiography is a page turning story of a special life. It exposes  and explains  as only he can important events of the last fifty years of The American Experience. Dershowitz has been a player contributing to the national conversation for half a century. Everybody takes his calls." –Stephen Trachtenberg, president, George Washington University

Alan Dershowitz offers a complete explanation, from a legal perspective, of all the great issues which have affected the US for the last 50 years. He has known, and often advised or represented, many famous people as well as doing half his cases pro bono. Most importantly for me, he comes across as a professor and his analysis of both sides of these issues is very profound.

Alan is one of the best writers in the US, in my opinion. I don't always agree with him politically, but you can count on his highest integrity, superb intelligence and very easy-to-read style. So much history in this book, a must read for a curious person over 15.

My political philosophy and that of Professor Dershowitz could not be farther apart, but I admire him for the many good things he has done throughout his legal career. This book was an eye opener for me, as I was really not well versed in his many and varied cases, other than the ones that made national news. He has taken many principled stands in his life, and is not willing to back down from what he believes. Not a lot of lawyers, these days, can say that. My only disagreement with him is in his characterization of the case of Bush v. Gore. He opines that the majority in that matter voted to support the way they voted in the ballot box. There's really no way of knowing that, however. While he castigates the majority's political stance, he neglects to assume also that the minority may have voted to support the way they voted at the ballot box. Decisions termed "political" cut both ways, you know. That disagreement with his remarks did not change my wholehearted admiration for him, and particularly his avid support for Israel. As a Catholic attorney who has had two Jewish partners, I can understand the Professor's position. Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East, and must contend not only with its neighbors, but also with the anti-Israel faction in the United nations. Dershowitz supports Israel, and so do I.

If you've read some of Mr. Dershowitz's books before, you already know what an engaging and smart writer this man is. His title refers to his life from a youngster to his life now, and so is an autobiography, and I must say a fascinating biography. You'll be very pleasantly surprised at the amount of information that this man, who has been in the middle of so much our our country's very important scenes, shares with his readers. I highly recommend this book for all who love to read and to learn. All I need to say for readers of some of his works is that you will not, in the least bit, be disappointed by this book. On the contrary, I was sorry when it ended and wished it would have been 700 pages instead of the 400 something. Very enjoyable. For those who have yet to read any of his many books (I highly recommend "Reasonable Doubt" as well for a look into the true way our American justice/trial system is "supposed" to work.. This is all about O.J.'s 1994 trial. It is absolutely fascinating and eye opening.), you'll find this man to be a very intelligent and supremely interesting writer.

This is a great book and should be required reading for anyone planning to attend law school. It is being applauded for the life story, the famous cases and the liberalism but in my opinion it should be celebrated for the taste it gives the reader of the dance of the hypotheticals, the way of thinking taught at the great law schools, and to some graduates the primary reason for going to law school. Dershowitz shows the reader how he thinks, and how he argues on his appeals. Although my politics are as far right as his are left, and I am a constitutional strict constructionist and he is anything but, we seem to share the same sense of right and wrong, good and bad. This is only the second book I have forced on youngsters planning to go to law school, the other book being Harvey Silverglate's astonishing THREE FELONIES, and I did not know that Silverglate was a Dershowitz pupil and occasional associate. It is truly a small world. I don't know either man as I have met Dershowitz once and have never met Silverglate.

A Well WriAlthough a little self serving, It makes a strong case for civil liberties, it builds upon previous writings by the author. However, if one has followed the news of the past 2 decades one will capture his message.

Dershowitz shares his life story in an entertaining and, at times, pointed way. Of particular interest for a reader with a legal background is to hear the author's slant on his principles and focus on the First Amendment and the appeals of selected criminal law cases. He pioneered the the practice of law with being a Harvard Law School Professor (the youngest ever appointed to the faculty).Anyone wanting to view the last fifty years of social and legal history in the US, in fact the world as Dershowitz has a worldwide practice, needs to read this tomb so that they have a sense of his view of things--whether one agrees or disagrees with the author's views.

An absolutely fantastic book. I'm a conservative and think Mr. Dershowitz is a national treasure.

The EARTH Book, by Todd Parr

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4—The narrator states, "I take care of the earth because I know I can do little things every day to make a BIG difference." Parr then offers a practical catalog of simple activities easily managed by even quite young children, followed by clear explanations of how those simple things can have a large impact on the health of our planet. "I use both sides of the paper and bring my own bags to market because…I love the trees and I want the owls to have a place to live." The book is "printed with recycled materials and nontoxic soy inks." The vibrantly colored cartoons with heavy black outlines resemble those a child might create. Useful as an introduction to the subject, this is a bright and cheerful presentation.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

With illustrations that look as though they might have been done by enthusiastic children themselves, Parr’s book offers first-person advice about ways to take care of the earth. Although the suggestions are fine (“I turn off the faucet while I brush my teeth”) the reasons behind the actions (“because I love the fish”) could use more explanation for such a young audience. The strong appeal comes from the simple artwork done in Parr’s signature style, which features pure colors, objects and people outlined in thick black ink, and kids whose round faces are comprised of two dots for eyes and upturned lines for mouths. Young children will get a kick out of the vivid art (and the funny touches, like a fish wearing glasses); feel helpful when they do things like write on both sides of the paper; and perhaps intuit why protecting the environment is a good thing, if not exactly making the connection between saving paper and saving trees. Cuuuuute! I have a few small bones to pick, if you're particular like me you might care.1) I don't like the line about eating everything on your plate- I don't think that's an awfully healthy way to look at food. I do like that it says to save your leftovers. We'll focus on that part when we read it.2) I wish that the bit about water conservation had a justification that was a little more direct- saving water is not really about keeping the ocean blue. Everything else seems to be much more directly connected, and I feel the author could have done a little bit better on that particular bit.Really these are small complaints, we'll definitely keep the book. I think it does an excellent job of helping kids realized that they can do a lot to help take care of the earth, and my son LOVES the pictures.

Another fantastic book from popular children's author Todd Parr. His unique style of colorful illustrations and simple text are a smash hit with preschool and kindergarten audiences every time. This is the perfect book to read to your preschool or kindergarten class or child on Earth Day. Each page highlights one way young children can help make the world a better place followed by a "because" statement. Adding because statements makes the message in this book even more powerful. It's not about just telling kids to do something, but also giving them the reasons why it's important; therefore it becomes more meaningful to them. Parr also has a great sense of humor and knows his audience well as evidenced by the mention of underwear in the detachable poster that is included on the last page of the book. The Earth Book is sure to become a favorite with your child or class as they squeal with delight at the very thought of putting their underwear in the refrigerator!

Oh how I love this book! It's not too far to the hippie side or to the first world priveledge side. It's right in the middle, perfect for kids, telling them to be good stewards of their environment in small and big ways. The pictures are interesting and my kids were "reading" it to me after a few times. I got this as a fun and inexpensive retirement gift for a friend who was eager to go on his next adventure across the world.

My son grabbed this at preschool to show me when on his birthday he got to pick his favorite book to read to everyone. He talked about how much he loves the earth and that is why he wants to pick up the garbage....he is learning responsibility for the earth in a positive joyful way. It's terrific. So, we bought it for him to give to his dad for his birthday..so they can read it together.

Read it with my 4 year old. He loved it. Only I couldn't explain to him why the book says that you can help the Earth by putting your underwear in the freezer when it's hot? I am still trying to figure this one out!!! Otherwise, good book!

Very cute book. Nice illustrations and always good to have a book about something so important, rather than princesses etc.

As with other books for small children by Todd Parr, The EARTH book is a delight in words and pictures. It explains in simple language some important ideas about the earth and engenders a love of the planet in small children. Every parent is encouraged to get this book and others by Parr and read them to their children. Pre-schools would do well to have these books available as well.

After our recycling unit in the fall, we returned to this in April for EARTH DAY. Honestly, there is not a single Todd Parr book that I don't adore. His messages are spot on, and easy enough for my pre-K students to understand. They find the list of 10 things to do hilarious, especially putting underwear in the freezer- they just wait daily for me to read that to them, and it always makes us all laugh!

Angela Himsel writes of her modern day pilgrimage from doomsday cult to Judaism. Her youth could almost seem like a Norman Rockwell photo come alive --except that she belongs to a doomsday cult and doesn't even know it's a cult. The family is taken in by the cult leader's whims as they search for meaning. Himsel has her questions throughout yet the quest for a meaningful life is part of her heritage. She goes to Israel and learns to read the Bible critically but isn't quite ready to abandon the cult until later. She writes with grace and humor--both about the cult and later when she converts and people expect someone who knows what a sukkah is to also know what is expected at a bris. And just like Himsel's parent's remained close to their extended family after they joined their cult, Himsel's love for her family of origin shines through. This book is very thoughtful and thought provoking but also a quick read.

Few people have the courage and wherewithal to follow their hearts; Angela Himsel is one who did. Starting with her humble beginnings in Southern Indiana, she weaves an incredible tale of her religious upbringing, her growing uneasiness about the philosophies she was taught, and her slow realization that Judaism may be the key to an authentic relationship with God. Told with brutal honesty and a pinch of humor, "A River Could be a Tree" is a wonderful journey written by a strong woman who both values her roots and embraces her future. I highly recommend this book.

I read so many parts of this book aloud to my husband, who also found the writer's search for her truth quite astonishing. Angela Himsel is unsparing in her analysis of those elements which created the person she once was...and why it took so long to commit to a new way of self-identifying. Angela's penetrating curiosity about life outside her conservative upbringing, her sharp wit, and friendly, open personality has taken her to exhilarating destinations both outward and inward. Take the journey with her.

The evening my book came in the mail, I could not put it down until I finished it. Angela is a very talented writer that describes this unique story in such a way that even if you don't know much about the religions or lifestyles referenced in the book, you feel as if you were there and understand the all of the emotions behind her journey.I highly recommend this book if you're looking for an exclusive, raw story that has the ability to make you laugh, cry, and even possibly question your own journey.

I laughed, I cried, I thought about my own religious journey thus far. This book was easy to read and also very enlightening. The reader travels from the Midwest to the the Middle East and ends in New York City all while learning about family and friend dynamics. This book made me remember that we never truly know what other people are going through or where they come from. Or the life changing decisions they have in front of them at any given moment. After reading this book, I have a new desire to reach out to my own family and dig deeper into my own past.

The author did a fantastic job writing this riveting memoir. The story is compelling (not surprising, because its true and she was compelled to make so many changes to her life) and the writing is excellent. I could not stop reading. She deals with serious and important life issues and considerations, but captures them all in a fun and easy read. Once this book arrives in your mailbox you will not want to put it down. I am already looking forward to her next book!

With humor and compassion, Angela Himsel writes a riveting memoir that takes you from a modern day Christian cult to a spiritual search for finding her true calling. Hard to put down. Fascinating to hear how lives outside the mainstream could exist only 30 -40 years ago in belief of a rapture to come in 1975!

This book is a fascinating read about a women’s spiritual journey into what is meaningful for her. Angela Himsel is a fine writer with great descriptions and a bit of self deprecating humor. Her descriptions create a very vivid image of who she was and who she is as a woman. It’s truly a fascinating story of how Angela was committed to find meaning in her life and not just accept what she had grown up with.
