I highly recommend this book about a Jewish family from Poland in 1939 describing their circuitous and challenging journey to freedom. Told through the eyes of teenage Tanya, she recounts many narrow and fateful escapes from the invading Nazis. In their trail they leave behind communities of Jews who were cruelly decimated and destroyed. Tanya's father's keen instincts kept them on the run while miraculously managing to navigate the family to safely. It is a tale of refugees using resourcefulness while adapting to enormous challenges and dramatic life-style changes. From a comfortable life in Nowy Sacz, Tanya and her family find themselves in desolate, icy and inhospitable Siberia –exiled as enemies of Russia. The journey of several thousand kilometers takes them through Tajikistan and Europe. The harrowing and dangerous journey culminates in relief and joy with their arrival and potential of building a new life in Israel. This account of holocaust survival is an informative and novel story – one that should be studied and read. It is inspiring, sensitively and beautifully written, immersing the reader in the horror of occupation, adventure, displacement and ultimately, the miracle of survival against all odds.

This is a beautifully written story about resilience and resourcefulness (and luck) in the face of war and desperation and disease. How a refugee family stayed together and survived against the odds as they fled from the Nazis and survived terrible hardships together, finally reconstituting their lives in Israel after the war. The story is narrated by the teenaged daughter of the family. I found myself becoming rather emotional at different points, especially at how they managed to commemorate Passover in the face of extreme deprivation in Siberia. A great read!

I have been through a lot in my life, especially as a teenager. When I heard from a friend about this book I decided to give it a go. It exceeded my expectation on every way. I really connected with Tanya and everything she had to deal with. Being a true story, I felt uplifted and gifted to be living in such wonderful times and yet admire and feel inspired by those who had to live through WW2. Good read!

A very moving story based on true facts telling of one girls life growing up in Europe during the second world War, her experiences, feelings, fears and finally arriving in Israel. A true life history lesson.

Definitely a good read. A compelling true story that casts light on a rarely-described aspect of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a young women fleeing further and further east as the Holocaust encroaches. Recommended for Young Adults and upwards.

I have read many books, fiction and non-fiction, about this era, and it never ceases to amaze me that I can still be surprised by unknown stories that have never been told. This is one of them. Truth is certainly stranger than fiction – and more interesting.

I've read a lot of books about the Holocaust and this one told a story I'd never heard before. It was well written and I felt like I got to know Tanya. I kept thinking about how life can change at any minute and how attitude and luck can determine our path.

We can never stop learning from stories about the Second World War and the cruelty not only of the Nazis, but of the Russians an even ordinary folk. This is an important story to tell.

Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks

Review

“Quarterback is the most popular position in football, and football the most popular sport in America. In Blitzed, Thomas George takes readers on a fascinating inside journey of the high-stakes risks and rewards of that job, and how far teams will go to ride a young gunslinger to success. A terrific insider’s view from a long-time football insider himself.” —Mitch Albom, New York Times bestselling author and sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press “If you believe that the statement ‘by studying the past you’ll be prepared for the future’ is true, then I recommend you read Blitzed! We all make personnel mistakes as we build our NFL teams—maybe more within the quarterback position—so a read such as this by Thomas George is a very worthy experience. I found Blitzed to be informative, educational, and revealing. Great job, Thomas!” —Dick Vermeil, NFL coaching legend "The biggest mystery in modern football is not what team will finally dethrone the Patriots for NFL supremacy, but rather which hotshot college quarterback will become a professional star. Thomas George rationally and methodically puts a microscope on this conundrum, from what happens when a coach realizes his bonus baby doesn't have the goods ("Devastating," Dick Vermeil calls that feeling) to enlightening chapter and verse on the Eagles' pursuit of new great quarterback hope Carson Wentz. I'm glad George doesn't advance a theorem that will guarantee success for a young quarterback, because as he lays out, there simply isn't one." —Peter King, editor in chief, The Monday Morning Quarterback “Blitzed by Thomas George is a through, complete, and riveting study of the challenge faced by teams trying to find and develop a franchise quarterback. As one who has lived it, I can tell you that Blitzed is a ‘must-read’ for every NFL fan.” —Bill Polian, former general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, NFL analyst with ESPN, and Hall of Fame executive “A franchise quarterback is the NFL’s most important asset, and Blitzed is the most important work on this subject. Thomas George delves into the subject of franchise quarterbacks, trying to explain the riddle that baffles and bewilders the worst teams, and rewards and stabilizes the best ones. It is educating, enlightening, and highly enjoyable.” —Adam Schefter, ESPN NFL Insider "I've known Thomas George for a long time and have always respected the quality of his work. He puts years of experience and expertise covering the NFL to excellent use in Blitzed. With particular focus on Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, and Dak Prescott, George dissects the trickiest task in sports—finding and developing the franchise quarterback. How do you know when a quarterback has that "it" factor? Thomas knows." —Jim Thomas, NFL writer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Thomas George has written one of the most important books about the NFL in years. Blitzed is a provocative first-hand look at how NFL teams thrust very young men into the most difficult position in professional sports and demand they succeed—now. I could not put this book down.” —Sal Paolantonio, National Correspondent, ESPN “Thomas George has spent thirty-five years seeking answers to what makes some NFL quarterbacks great while others fail. In Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble On Starting Rookie Quarterbacks, he uses his wealth of experience and lifetime of NFL contacts to explore what has become the central issue of successful team building in the NFL. Why are more rookie quarterbacks being handed the ball and why do so few succeed? What determines success or failure? Thomas George set out to find the answers and succeeded like Tom Brady. By the time you finish Blitzed you'll understand why more and more teams risk the future on rookie quarterbacks and why all but a handful are doomed from the start.” —Ron Borges, writer for the Boston Herald and author of Present at the Creation: My Life in the NFL and the Rise of America’s Game “Thomas George knows the ins and outs of the NFL and, in particular, NFL quarterbacking. He dives into the age-old issue of finding a franchise quarterback in an insightful way. George’s interviews with coaches who have found and failed to find that star quarterback provide deep analysis of the biggest challenge for pro football teams. And his examination of the flops is especially enlightening.” —Barry Wilner, pro football writer, Associated Press “Ever wonder why some early-round quarterbacks thrive and others fail? Thomas George goes behind the scenes to give you the answers from the coaches and decision-makers whose livelihoods depend on making the right choice at the game’s most important position.” —Alex Marvez, writer for The Sporting News and host of SiriusXM NFL Radio“Quarterback is the most popular position in football, and football the most popular sport in America. A decent book, but already out of date as a result of Goff and Wentze's sophmore seasons

Every year at the NFL draft, the most talked-about position is the quarterback. Who's going to be the next star? Who will be the franchise quarterback who will save the struggling team? In Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks, veteran sports writer Thomas George examines the quarterback position, taking the reader behind the scenes into the toughest role in all of sports.Reviewing a wide variety of NFL quarterback's careers, focusing on the past decade or so, George makes the case that there really isn't a case for the best approach to acquiring, training, and utilizing a new quarterback. Are the number one draft picks successful? Sometimes. Is it best to immediately play a rookie? Sometimes. Is it best to have them sit and learn under more experienced players? Sometimes. Is trading up for a first-round draft pick to get a good quarterback worth it? Sometimes. For every example, there are plenty of counter examples. Who could have foreseen Dak Prescott's rise from a late-round pick to an MVP? Who could have predicted that RG3 would flame out so quickly? NFL buffs will enjoy George's abundant interviews and back stories. He traversed the league and talked to many of the biggest name players and coaches to gain valuable insights. But conclusions? Not really. As to the question of the subtitle, why do NFL teams gamble on starting rookie quarterbacks? They're looking for the magic. "Without a franchise quarterback, you are on a train on a track to nowhere." It's all about dynasties, championships, and Super Bowls. Every team is looking for the one leader who will get them there. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Blitzed is an outstanding new football book by sportswriter Thomas George. For anyone wondering why NFL teams invest so much time and effort into developing the QB position in the modern NFL, this is perhaps the definitive book in that space. Where George succeeds is in investigating the topic with authenticity, drawing upon relationships with his subjects, among them coaches like Jon Gruden, and Kyle Shanahan. Included are intimate interviews with some of the foremost experts in NFL QB development. George has covered college and pro football for decades, and is able to get marquee interviews and insight from some of the top minds in the football world.Clearly in today's NFL, having a successful QB is the difference between having a playoff drought and being an annual Super Bowl contender. And in order to change the fortunes of a franchise, teams routinely gamble by drafting and acquiring young and inexperience QB's. These QB's, more than ever, are coming from a college system that has not prepared them for the NFL game as a rookie. So logic says not to play them right away. However, when playing a QB early works, it can pay massive and immediate dividends. As we have seen with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2017 season, having a young QB like Carson Wentz, one of those featured in the book, can set up a roster for years to come with little wait time. On the other hand, a team like the Cleveland Browns, also featured in the book, can essentially feel directionless due to a historical lack of success with QB development. How to develop a young player at the QB position is up for debate. Recent examples of temporary success, such as QB Robert Griffin III with the Washington Redskins, are highlighted in great detail. As the book explains, it becomes evident that the line between sustained success and ending up a flash in the pan as a young QB is a a very thin line indeed, with many contributing factors.Does playing a young rookie right away ultimately hinder his development, or propel him to a promising future? Not every team can be the Green Bay Packers, and have the luxury of sitting Aaron Rodgers for three years behind a Hall of Famer in Brett Favre, as George notes. Many teams are forced to play their prized QB's right away, in their rookie seasons to "see what they have," even if sitting and learning is a better option. At what point do coaches feel the pressure to play a young QB, even to that player's detriment, because a coach or front office executive's job is on the line? How do those decisions get made? All of these issues are covered in Blitzed. For a behind the scenes look at one of the most critical decisions a football team can make, this is a worthwhile read for any football or sports fan.

If you want an education on what it's like to play quarterback in the NFL as a rookie, then read this book. I think all junior or senior college quarterbacks as well as NFL rookie quarterbacks, should have this book in their book collection. The author of this book didn't just share his thoughts on rookie quarterbacks, he actually went out and conducted interviews with former and current NFL head coaches, who spent most of their lives coaching offenses on the high school, college, and pro levels. Those interviews not only were the best parts of this book, but they also helped this book's cause. This book was short, but it did its job in educating its readers on what rookie quarterbacks have to go through to have success in the NFL.

Notes from a Dead House (Vintage Classics)

Review

“A master of psychological portraiture. . . . A testament to the power of the human will, the way it can marshal patience and imagination and hope.” —The New Criterion "Excellent. . . . Dostoevsky's constant preoccupation is the meaning of human freedom and the prisoners' preservation of their dignity." —Harper's Magazine "One of the most harrowingly universal books Dostoevsky ever wrote. . . . It's cause for no small celebration that the extraordinary series of translations by Pevear and Volokhonsky has now seized on Notes from The House of the Dead." —The Buffalo News"The appearance of any new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky is always an event in a literary season. . . . [A] powerful new translation." —Open Letters Monthly"One of literature's definitive prison memoirs. . . . A classic made current and a welcome addition to the library of Russian literature in translation." —Kirkus Reviews "Dostoevsky unflinchingly describes the dehumanization of prison, such as the way fetters were not even lifted from the dying, but also conveys how the flame of humanity survives even under such conditions, allowing cleverness and compassion to endure. This new translation is eminently readable." —Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) is best known for the series of novels he wrote in the last twenty years of his life—Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, The Adolescent, and The Brothers Karamazov—which made him one of the major figures of Western literature. These works were all nourished by and partly foreshadowed in Notes from a Dead House (1862), the author’s semifictional account of his own experiences as a political prisoner in Siberia from 1850 to 1854.Together, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have translated works by Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Pasternak. They were twice awarded the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize (for their versions of Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov and Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina), and their translation of Dostoevsky’s Demons was one of three nominees for the same prize. They are married and live in France.

Another excellent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. If you've read other translations of this book---mis-titled in earlier versions---you will feel you are reading it for the first time. Notes from a Dead House, in this translation, is also a good introduction for readers just getting into Dostoevsky, because it raises so many of the ethical and moral concerns in his later books, though only in outline here. We're fortunate to have the many fresh translations that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced; any of them will make you want to read all of Dostoevsky, or reread him again as if for the first time.

I have been reading Dostoyevsky for 20 years. Dostoyevsky's writing changed dramatically by his prison camp experience. It took on meaning that his earlier works did not have. Therefore reading this work has it's importance regarding what shaped the Dostoevsky of novels like "The Brothers Karmazov". Suffering brings clarity to what life means when it's stripped of pride, self reliance, and selfishness. You see although he didn't state it in the work, through his suffering Dostoyevsky discovered the nature of God, Christ, and himself. That clearly comes through his later works.

This novel has a few moments of important and well stated insight to the human condition but overall its dry delivery left me unimpressed. The Gulag Archipelago is more insightful for prison life.

My love for the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky has been passed down to the next two generations. It is no accident that one of my grandson's bears the middle name of Fyodor! The author's memoir about prison life - thinly disguised as a novel, has undergone a stunning and beautiful new translation at the hands of the gifted husband and wife team of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.Dostoevsky was initially sentenced to die by firing squad for his involvement in a Utopian socialist discussion group. The CTsar commuted his sentence to four years in Siberia. This book, "Notes From A Dead House" represents Dosoevsky's memories of those years, smuggled out of the prison in bits and pieces. Most striking in this narrative is the transformation that the aristocratic protagonist undergoes as he begins to recognize the common humanity that he shares with many of the prisoners - even with the least likable among them. The language in this marvelous translation is rich and evocative. The characters we meet are memorable and idiosyncratic, in many cases giving hints at future fictional characters like Raskolnikov and members of the Karamazov family. For any fan of Dostoevsky's remarkable oeuvre, this book is a welcome addition to your library.

Amazing book. I I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I couldn't put it down! Highly recommend.

It’s too bad the physical book was so damaged when I got it. The pages weren’t cut evenly and the front cover had a massive crease on it I couldn’t manage. I read it anyways though - great book but buy it from someone else

Super book...very dark

Having read Dostoevsky's other major works, it is a revelation to read Notes from A Dead House. All the themes for which he was later known, sin and humanity, violence and redemption, can be traced to this singular experience that transformed Dostoevsky's vision of the world. Though the book is a fictional account, it is based on Dostoevsky's four years in exile. And that personal connection comes through on every page. Perhaps in no other work of his storied career is his psychological analysis more honest and immediate as it is here. The book also serves as a stunning reminder of the power of the individual; his capacity for change, his capacity for empathy, ultimately transcend the bondage of institution. At a time when we are focused so much on changing institutions, reading this book may just provide some much needed perspective.
