As it is the first in Christi Caldwell's new series, it would make an excellent starting point for new readers of hers. She is a wonderfully articulate author who loves her broken heros and heroines and has the fantastic ability to pull her readers in to make them feel as if they are a part of the story.
I absolutely love Christi Caldwell. I bought The Heart of the Duke and kept getting the books because I felt she really made the characters come to life and make you identify with them. This series I had a hard time with. I suspect she wanted to address war and the effects it can have on a man and that there are women who are able to help them work through issues that keep them in turmoil. This is probably the best of the series and I would recommend it. However, where the Heart of the Duke series was actually light, this can seem a little dark and really challenged me.
Lucien Jones/Jonas has been estranged from his family after his father bought him a commission in the army. Lucien (the 3rd son) had wanted to enter the church but his father insisted. During his time in the army his wife died along with the son he never saw. Worse, he wasn't told anything about his wife and son's death until he returned home On top of everything else, he lost his arm from war injuries. Rather that return to the family home after the war, this viscount's son took up a position as a butler divorcing himself from his past.Enter Eloise, his friend from childhood. They grew up together and were inseparable until he met the woman he would eventually marry. He never knew that Eloise had loved him and hoped to marry him herself. She is now a widow in London and is looking for him. His father is dying and his brother's hope he can put all the bad feelings aside and make peace with his father before he dies.From the first, seeing Eloise seems to shake him out of the fog he's been living in. She brings his past back to the forefront and makes him see that his family loves him and wants him back. The trip back home and meeting with his family is a tearful experience (maybe not for the participants but I personally went through multiple tissues).As always, Christi Caldwell manages to tell a story that makes you feel for the characters. they are well written and make you want to care about them.
Read several of Christi Caldwell 's books. This is way below her usual standard. It was a chore to get through this one. Characters were very disappointing. Couldn't make up his mind. Couldn't stand her then loved her, back and forth. And she was like a puppy, throw me a bone, I'll love you forever. She was supposed to be such a strong woman but she "wilted" every time she was near him. Don't think so.
This book will hurt you at your very core. Honestly, my heart bled for Lucien and Eloise. This was unrequited love at its best and at its deepest. Their HEA is paved with a lot of heartache, but their journey is made beautiful because of it. I cried so much for these two. Eloise deserves an award for "Heroine of the Century". How amazingly blessed Lucian is that he has this steadfast woman in his life. Such a beautiful story of love and devotion. Read with a box of Kleenex because you will cry your heart out. Totally loved this story!!We first read about Lieutenant-Captain Lucien Jonas in Forever Betrothed, Never a Bride. I was so curious about him then, and so glad that Christi Caldwell gave him a story. Seduced By a Lady's Heart solidified Christi Caldwell's place on my "Keeper Shelf".
Eloise Yardley had loved Lucien Jones since they were children. They were always there for one anothe she knew they would marry him. Her dream fell apart after Lucien saw Sarah the vicar's daughter. He never thought of Eloise.again. He had only been married a few months when his father bought him a commission to go to war, he came back from it with one arm and his wife and child dead,Eloise had married her husband was dead she was now a Countess.Lucien refused to see his family since he left for the war,he hates them all.he was now an angry hard man working as a butler.His family wants Eloise to try and get him to go home his father is dying. Eloise is still in love with him. She did Lucien a very good deed but takes him quite awhile to find out about it. I agree with another reviewer this is her best book. The book has sadness but you keep hoping for a happy ending for all the characters especially Eloise and Lucien. I would recommend you read this will not give away anymore of the story.
