I cannot read this series anymore. The author cannot seem to actually capture the era in which she CHOSE to write. She, makes constant, and increasingly overt, progressive condemnations of the culture at that time, when it does not help the storyline., even when it hurts the storyline. Why she would choose to write in a timeframe she can't understand is perplexing.I enjoy reading to learn more about the times before. While I don't expect those days to be presented in fluffy perfection, I do expect the writer to at least refrain from constantly interjecting personal political, contemporary points of view. I read historical "mysteries" to escape, not to be lectured.So, if you are not solidly in the Progressive Political camp, this may not be your cup of tea.

This is a terribly disappointing novel. I have read every one of the Maggie Hope mysteries but this may be my last. The plot doesn't justify the length, and it felt to me like a bad Agatha closed room mystery. The characters were never developed at least in my mind and I read far to many pages waiting for the inevitable unmasking to occur. Maggie is a great character, but his book is too slow to develop an unconvincing in resolution. I wish we were back in the old Winston, Eleanor, Princess Elizabeth days. I think its farewell for me.

I received an ARC from NetGalley of this mystery in exchange for an honest review; however, I also purchased the book. The Prisoner in the Castle is different from the others as it's written in the vein of Agatha Christie. Maggie Hope isn't on a regular mission -- she's in a castle with other spies who begin to disappear. If Maggie can't figure out whom she can trust and why fellow spies are being eliminated, she may be next. The Prisoner in the Castle is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of thrills and twists. I loved it and highly recommend it!

The author consistently makes errors of detail that, to me, detract from the overall story. Such things as Spitfires flying over Germany early in the war; why? Spitfires did not have the range to fly there and back while doing anything useful. They weren't bombers or capable of flying escort at that distance. In this book, the author states that the radio on the supply boat is used for voice communication, but later, when the enemy agent is communicating with the submarine, an interception of Morse code comms is made. Although some radios of the era were capable of both forms of communication, they generally were capable of one or the other as the frequency bands used were different.Also, although the drama is good for maintaining reader interest, there is too much angst and 'soul-searching' for my taste. Maggie Hope is left dangling at the end of the book; does she quit working for the government in disgust at the lack of trust in her or does she return to the fold as a good British subject?

I enjoy the Maggie Hope novels because of their well researched history. At first I thought of MacNeal's novels as light reading .However, her stories have become more and more compelling as she has continued Maggie Hope's adventures . This latest adventure is an homage to Agatha Christie's novel And then there were None which is referred to in the story, under its original title. The story is gripping and well written and hard to put down .It brings home the fear and uncertainty of Brittain fighting literally for it's survival. Excellent read.

I love this series. Probably going to need to reread the first 3 books to remind myself that I like it. This book was way too much like the Agatha Christie book, And Then There Were None. I saw the movie version of it and it was amazing. At first I didn't mind the clearly inspired plot. But Macneal didn't even change the murderer! The murderers in both stories are the paralleling characters! Such a disappointment. Also upsetting halfway in the book when you realize the prologue was pointless. Also, a lot of repetition in dialogue. Basically all the characters in the book are filler. The reason Agatha Christie's characters worked so well was because they all had back stories that tied into the reason they were killed off! Maybe the next one will be better since Maggie will be back in London. I just hope the author isn't getting tired of Maggie and it's showing in the writing. Overall, did not like this book.

I'm not sure I like the "worried" part where Franklin is "worried" about Moose because he is big - that could have been left out and it would have been a better book. But the book shows that being different is okay and that you can have a variety of friends - which is good.

This book has a great message to accept others into a child's circle of friends. It teaches acceptance. Great book.

My 4yo toddler is absolutely in love with the Franklin books. They are beautifully illustrated and they are the perfect length for a bedtime reading. You can stop and discuss these stories with the young kid and relate them to real life behavior and they are a great teaching tool. As of now the "New Friend" book is one of his favorites.

If you're interesting in cooking, this is the book for you. Didn't know that mortar and pestles have been around for 20,000 years? True, apparently. The overbite that humans have? Only 200-250 years since that developed; before that, top teeth met bottom teeth in the front of the mouth to make tearing meat from the bone directly more efficient. Changes in eating habits made for changes to the jaw. Amazing.Anyway, great info about food preparation through the ages, development of kitchen gizmos and labor-saving devices (especially once slaves and indentured labor disappeared from homes of the wealthy). Neat info like Americans are the only cooks in the world to use measuring cups and measuring spoons; everyone else measures in their hand or with their fingers (just a pinch) ... who knew? And some measure by weighing each ingredient, apparently much more exact.Charmingly written, like having a conversation, though a bit more editorial attention would have been helpful. A few words are glitched almost as though the ebook was scanned from a print copy, but howlers like the following show up every once in a while:"This whirling mechanism was a big improvement on quern still took two the basic quern, but a large rotary women to operate, one to feed in the grain and one to keep turning it." Huh? I swear I read that six times and still can't figure out what it might have been originally, how many sentences are jumbled together, or what. ('Quern' I got because it's explained elsewhere - it's the bottom part of a circular grain mill against which the upper stone is rotated to grind the grain.)So, I recommend the book despite the few puzzles that appear here and there. Graphically excellent, illustrations are crisp and clear (though I don't understand why fractions are sometimes displayed as graphics; one doesn't need a picture of 7/16" when the numerals as text are fine; typographically okay, formatted fine on my Kindle Keyboard.

I 'had' to read this book for a college class I am taking - I use the parentheses because I actually loved this book (and how often can you say that about required college texts?) The author uses a conversational tone to walk us through a few millennia of kitchen lore and gadgetry. I can't say I've ever given much though to the fork before - but to find out that when the fork became part of our meal routine, this led to quick, universal changes in our anatomy over very short periods of time? Who knew! I found this book incredibly informative and entertaining at the same time.

If you enjoy cooking ....or just enjoy eating....this book is a fun and entertaining read. But it is also far more than that. Combining anthropology and archaeology this well researched and documented book reveals far more than the history of apparatus and how cooking has changed. I discovered this book while reading a novel in which one of the characters was reading the book. I am glad that I ordered it for myself. Despite its contents heavy on history and science it is eminently readable. I bought it for my daughter for Christmas thinking she would enjoy it. Decided to read it myself and am so glad that I did. Written by a British writer it has a European and British tilt but for me that makes it all the more interesting. I think you will be surprised at the breadth of knowledge imparted you would never have thought about and certainly never associated with cooking much less the apparatus used for cooking. Covering the history of various cooking tools, both those that work and those discarded anyone interested at all in the subject of food will find this a tasty read. If there were six stars I would give it to this book and can highly recommend it both to the culinary inclined, those interested in history as well as the general reader.

My review is not for the book’s content but rather the actual book itself. I finally started reading it and love what I have read so far. This past weekend, however, the book literally fell apart at the seams. I was enjoying it immensely, when, quite suddenly, the pages detached from the cover. Even more interesting, it detached in almost identical thirds and now the individual pages are detaching which turns the pleasure of reading it into a juggling act. Unfortunately, my return/exchange window is closed so it seems I am stuck with a defective product. I am so sad and am quite certain that Bee Wilson would be disappointed with Amazon, Basic Books and the Perseus Book Group and whomever else is responsible for its construction and quality assurance. :(

I'm seriously crazy about this book. Wilson's research is impeccable. She writes with an engaging style, a pleasing wit and a depth of knowledge that repeatedly gives a reader pause for thought. The premise of the work is not another catalogue of recipes. It is, instead, true to the tile: how we cook, how we eat, and the technology that has made these essential tasks possible for ages. Wilson's love of the kitchen illuminates every page. For those of us who like nothing better than our kitchens and the gear we use to bake and cook, this book is the literary equivalent of a perfect batch of croissants.

Some tighter editing would have made this book much better.... but overall, the content is fascinating and is reasonably accurate. Very easily gobbled up in a day. While I would have preferred specific Chicago style end notes, general notes are provided, as is a bibliography for those who wish to fact check and research further. I enjoyed it. I'm not sure why the Kindle version has so many typos, but this seems to be a common complaint. I bought, and will always buy, a hard copy to read. I've tried, but I don't care for Kindle at all.

She worked for The Help Group, a large non-profit in Los Angeles, for seven years as a school-based therapist and a clinical director. Katie also launched her private practice, co-facilitated social skills groups, and taught parenting classes during that time. She currently practices psychotherapy in the South Bay area of Los Angeles and is a freelance writer for many online parenting publications. Her work can be found on EverydayFamily, Momtastic, mom.me, Yahoo Parenting and The Huffington Post. Katie writes for the parenting blog Practical Parenting. This book's title says everything: It is truly a handbook I refer to constantly. Katie's wisdom, logic and reassurances -- plus her gentle, kind sense of humor -- make me feel like I don't just have a book but rather a lifelong resource who understands what I'm going through as a parent and can calmly walk me through the rough spots.As mom to three children under six, I constantly second-guess myself or see new "behaviors" arise unexpectedly. The Happy Kid Handbook has emphasized all behavior is communication, but that no two children arrive at those behaviors necessarily the same way. An added bonus is that this book has helped me realize the need to approach my children differently based on their personalities, and taught me that doing so really will result in happier kids, happier ME and a happier home.At the heart of the book is the brilliant concept that for us each to be happy, we must understand what happy really means (again, for each of us) and how we can get there. HKH is broken into easy-to-read chapters that give simple explanations and useful practice tactics to help us in turn help our children understand emotions, both by responding healthfully and even learning to prevent what may have become predictable unhappy outcomes.I can't imagine this is the last we'll hear from Katie because this information is just so critical to effective, successful parenting. If every parent could read this book, the world would be a kinder, gentler, happier, better place. Sound dramatic? Read it for yourself and tell me otherwise. I also highly recommend this as mandatory reading for all educators, beginning with pre-K.

Katie Hurley's "Happy Kid Handbook" has had a dramatic impact on how my wife and I view every single aspect of parenting. We were slowly but surely falling victim to the traps of over-scheduling our daughter, and we felt as though the three of us were prisoners of our own calendar creations. This book is very easy to read and helpful for anyone who wants to improve his/her parenting. This evening, I had the pleasure of hearing Mrs. Hurley speak about her new book. Mrs. Hurley is an LCSW, which is a therapist, but she is also a mother. Her ideas are evidence based and very practical. I strongly recommend both her books and if possible seeing her in person.

As a mother of 3, and an elementary school counselor, I loved it!!! It's easy to read, no psycho-babble, simple back to the basics recommendations. Play!! Tune in!! Listen to your kids!! There was not a chapter that wasn't helpful in some way. I can't wait to recommend this to parents of my students. SUCH a good read!!

As an early childhood teacher educator, my hope for prospective teachers is that they treat the children in their classrooms as individuals. Understanding each child's unique strengths and personality helps parents/educators know how to address challenging situations. The Happy Kid Handbook is a wealth of strategies used to motivate and understand children using each child's emotional, social, cognitive, and physical strengths. Katie gives parents and educators alike a blueprint for fostering resilient, happy, and productive children and for taking back childhood.

There are many books about parenting but this one really hits home. I have 2 very different children and just like Katie describes they both have very different needs that we need to attend too. Its true that we get caught up in the day to day to dos we all parents have to get through but the most important thing is to get our children the attention they crave and need. Thank you Katie for yet another excellent book!
