About the Author

Carl Hiaasen (pronounced "hiya-sun") was born and raised in South Florida and presently lives in Tavernier, smack in the middle of the Florida Keys. He attended Emory University and was graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Florida at Gainesville in 1974. Hiaasen began his journalism career writing weird public interest stories ("Garbageman for a day") at Cocoa Today (now the Melbourne-based Florida Today). He joined the Miami Herald in 1976, and since then has been a reporter for their general assignment desk, Sunday magazine and investigative team. As part of The Miami Herald's investigative team, Hiaasen has worked on projects exposing dangerous doctors in Florida, land corruption in the Florida Keys, and drug smuggling in the Bahamas and Key West. He is currently Metro columnist for the paper where his award-winning columns on rapacious development, egregious business practices, and corrupt politicians have helped clarify issues for the Florida citizenry. Carl Hiaasen turned his hand to fiction in the early eighties. His first novel, Tourist Season,was published in 1986 and named "one of the ten best destination reads of all time" by GQ Magazine. He is the author of five other best-selling novels, Double Whammy, Skin Tight, Native Tongue, Strip Tease and Stormy Weather. Louise Bernikow, writing in Cosmopolitan, calls Hiaasen's fiction "unbelievably funny -- tears-running-down-your-cheeks funny in spite of some pretty weighty themes like the destruction of the environment and the cut-throat ways of developers." Tony Hillerman calls Hiaasen "the Mark Twain of the crime novel." And Donald Westlake says "Hiaasen is so good he ought to be illegal." I have read a number of Hiaasen novels, but not for a few years. How wonderful to be welcomed back to a wacky Florida world he illustrates like a mad modern art painting. The characters are delightfully evil and deceitful, typically disillusioned and finally redeeming. Florida is now my adopted home and these personalities are more believable everyday good and bad. A terrific vacation read to be savored by the beach wherever it might be. Don’t miss it.

I got into Hiaasen after reading an article on Florida crime fiction in the New Yorker. The article concentrates specifically on Hiaasen's writing, at one point comparing his style with Tom Wolf's Miami novel "Back to Blood". there are style similarities - both are social satirists, both see the world through a glass, darkly. However, neither is Hiaasen the word smith that Wolf is, nor is his intent the same. I've always felt Wolf works best as a social critic. He tends not to delve deeply into his characters' psyches, but rather rumages around in the milieu in which they live. For me, Hiaasen's primary intent is to entertain, and he does that in spades. Lucky You is chock full of outlandish characters and situations. I had a lot of chuckles and a few belly laughs reading him. He's a great read when you need a break (for me a two day reading break before I march into Foote's third volume of his Civil War narrative), or simply want an entertaining read. My second Hiaasen, and I will definitely read more.

Although this book has quirky characters and the usual satirical look at things in the state of Florida it is not as engaging as many of Hiaasen's other books. It seemed to be a rather "slow read" when compared to many of his other books. Although superior to most satirical writing from current authors this is not one of Hiaasen's best. As "Hiaasen's best" is outstanding, this means the book is entertaining if one is not familiar with his other offerings. Books like SICK PUPPY are "laugh out loud" funny. This one is amusing but has a bit of a bite.

Classic Hiaasen. Crazy characters. Twisted plots. And the inevitable unlikely romance. This one was particularly fun because it has several plot elements twisting around at the same time. If one plot line starts getting strained, you know the next chapter deals with a different, but related event.

Laugh out loud funny turns into leaden droning as the story drags on and on. Couldn't wait till the pain was over. One of Hiaasen's worst.

I read this book while getting inspiration for my book The Medici Iris: A Tale of Murder, Sex, Drugs...and Horticulture - Hiaasen always has crazy capers with multiple character arcs that come together at the end. It's hard to pull off, but he often brings it all together.I had trouble with country-losers wanting to get ANOTHER winning lottery ticket [could they not see they had already WON?!], but it would not have been a story if they had had any brains.The reporter protagonist was was a good character. I liked the pokes he took at his editor and his relationship with the leading lady evolves in a believable way. No spoilers - but the last part of the book is a little morbid [in a good way] out in the bayou...but what a good place for it all to happen.Enjoyed it and will check out more by this author

I'll preface this by noting that I received a free electronic review copy prior to publication, on which this review is based. That said, I'm also buying a copy so I have the final edited version for future re-reads.This being volume 10 in an on-going series, I'm going to assume that you have already read the previous installments. If not, while the book is readable without having read it's predecessors, it will be much more enjoyable if you read them in order. It's part of an on-going story arc, not a series of stand-alone adventures featuring recurring characters. Also, while not wanting to share any spoilers here, it is very clearly not the final installment of the series. It does wrap up a section of plot in a satisfying manner, but the characters are definitely not getting to settle down for a happy retirement at the end of this one.I'm going to try to avoid too many spoilers here, but I am assuming you're read the previous books. In terms of characters, this book spends more time switching viewpoints than some of the previous installments. The storyline is about getting the two groups of characters who have been separated by circumstances in the most recent books back together, which naturally requires switching back and forth between them as the timeline goes forward, and they try to overcome their respective sets of not quite insurmountable obstacles.Don't assume that it's all action though - there is character development too. The alternate universe Kelsey gets a lot of attention, as she grapples with accepting that people in this universe are not the same as their counterparts in her home universe, despite identical appearances and backgrounds. I've liked that fact that she didn't resolve those issues instantly in the first installment where she appeared, and, avoiding spoilers, think the developments in this book were well handled.There are also several interesting developments that hint at plot complications in future books. The AI's may not be as monolithic in behavior as we have heretofore thought, there are some interesting theories proposed (but not confirmed) regarding how the original AI was corrupted, and a mysterious heavily guarded flip point that no one has an explanation for yet.In summary, this is a worthy addition to the series, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

Terry once again weaves a good yarn in his empire of bones saga working to reunite the two main protagonists as we see them make enemies and allies as they finally get to the sol system and Terra, my only complaint is that is too short, leaving me wanting to read the next book like a Netflix binge, if you have liked the previous entries you'll love this one(full disclosure I did receive a free arc in return for an honesty review, but I also purchased the book as well)

If you're into serialized story telling, Mixon is becoming a master. Book 10 in the Kelsey & Jared saga does not disappoint. Aliens, intrigue, rebellion, evil AI empires, you'll find it all in the Empire of Bones saga.

I was surprised when the book ended, as I was so engrossed I lost track of my place in the book. I wasn't sure how the author was going to make everything happen and still be true to the story, but it happened. I can't wait until the next book to see how everything starts to come together in resolving the main story line.

Hope back and forth because Jared and Kelsey are separated, though a second Kelsey is there as well. Rushing to Terra and avoiding suicide missions, traitors of a sort, and paranoid rogue AIs is so much fun. Terry where is the next one, I want it.

This is a fabulous book! I love the Empire of Bones series! Such a great universe that Terry has created! Incredibly well written with great characters, story line, action and dialog! I highly recommend checking it out!

Great story. Keep them coming. The characters are well described and without ruining ing the story he even uses interesting ways to change known characters.

This is another great entry into the Empire of Bones saga. I've followed these characters for 10 books now and I'm excited to see where we're going. Terry mixes action, science, and social commentary as we explore what it means to be a leader and a hero.

Maybe my expectations were too high. There is no plot or character development. No interesting dialog. Nothing to this. Don't waste your money.

Candace by Michelle Miller can be found as one of the Amazon Original Stories (AOS) in a collection titled The Fairer Sex. This is Book One of an eight-book series. All can be read one at a time for free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription or the collection can be purchased as a set (not for free). all the short stories emphasize “short.” Candace, the first story in the series is only twelve pages. Grab a cup of coffee. You will finish the story before you finish the coffee.Candace is a short examination of a search for equality between the sexes as it is played out in a restaurant between Candace and Patrick. They were on a blind date which Patrick had rescheduled twice but only out of consideration for Candace. This is explained in the longest sentence I have ever read in a short story:“Because between the half bottle of wine and the way he was looking at her, and the surprise that still lingered from the moment she’d walked in, having made a more-than-lip-gloss-but-less-than-leg-shaving effort toward the blind date, which she’d agreed to, after he’d rescheduled twice, only because the restaurant he’d suggested had a salmon preparation she particularly liked, and found him reading the New Yorker, which was as contradictory to the expectations she’d set based on the sharp suit and look of disdain in his LinkedIn profile picture as the conversation he’d immediately begun—about the implications of want and need being the same word in Arabic, which he’d just read about in the magazine’s review of Lawrence Faber’s new film—she’d lost track of what she was going to say.” (Kindle locations 15-18).The above quote is from Candace’s first serious examination of Patrick as a possibility for future, closer relationships. Patrick knows all the right things to say. He pushes all the emotional buttons. And then …It is time to pay the bill. The results are surprising with a perfect twist at the end. This is good value as a five Amazon star Kindle Unlimited read. I would even pay to read this (if I had to).

It's like 14 pages and pointless and if the man wants to split the bill ok just don't go home with him no women pulls out this spreadsheet about women's rights and how women are overcharged and men should pay. What the hell

The story was initially well written and had interesting characters. However, the spreadsheet the main character used to chastise her date was ridiculous and ruined the story for me. The idea that a man should be shamed because women decide to buy a bunch of stuff that men don’t generally care about, is not something that should be celebrated as a win for feminism.

I didn't love this short story. There is a huge run in sentence a paragraph long in the beginning that was so hard to follow. The ending, with the cost break down seemed a tad ridiculous and unrealistic to me.

Reviewers are giving away the whole (very short) story in single-sentence critiques here. For shame! Well, no spoilers from me. I thought this was a great little story, a snapshot of a date-in-progress that is going rather well. It had intriguing enough characters that it could be the first chapter of a novel. (I really AM curious to see where this date is going!) But my big complaint is not being able to read a rather key document to the "plot" on my KIndle, no matter how much I fiddled with the font size or page orientation. Since this story is offered ONLY for e-reading, this seems a significant oversight ... or perhaps intended? ... if so, rather cruel. It is clear what the gist of the document is, but it would be very interesting to actually be able to read it. (On the other hand, no one else has mentioned this, so maybe it is just me and my indisputable non-techiness.)

I found this to be so very positive, and can truly see myself changing my thought process. But for me my mouth does get me into trouble with others as I am a realist and speak my mind good, bad or indifferent, but I stand up for others which causes problems with others (who are suppose to be Catholics, and speak negatively about others, so my mouth has gotten me into trouble). After reading this book, I can change myself to be more positive about myself, while continuing to help others.

This book was a great little read with Scripture and life examples. I learned that words are powerful and they are like seeds. Our words produce fruit and that fruit can be negative or positive. You will also learn how to override your negative thoughts through speaking positive words in spite of the negative thoughts. Our words produce fruit so what fruit is your tongue producing?

This short book packs a powerful message that can really change your life. He talks about the power of our words and how they effectively help or hinder our progress to our chosen goal. If you continually talk in the negative it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I recommend reading this book.

This little book is loaded with biblical and practical wisdom on the power of our words. But before I continue my review, I want to pause and say thank you Reverend J. Martin for writing this book. For the past year, l have been on a journey discovering how negative thoughts and words affect the function of the brain which then effects the body. Your book has encouraged and inspired me to continue being mindful of what I say to and about myself as well as others. Wow! Positive or negative words spoken on a regular basis has the power to change the trajectory of one's life. If everyone understood how important it is to speak words that bring life instead of death, marriages, relationship, our souls and bodies could begin to heal and give Glory to God!!

The book changed my entire way of thinking and talking. Excellent content. It focused on the message of the Bible of how important our words are to ourselves and those around us.The only problem was poor grammar in a few places.

A great book on using your words wisely as your words you have used in past leads up to where you are today. The words you use today will shape your future. One thing I GLEANED from this book was that instead of using your words to DESCRIBE a bad situation, instead use your words to CHANGE the situation. I would recommend to others.

Wouldn't recommend.--They need to be much clearer about the specific differences between the editions and what each includes so you don't end up having to buy editions that won't help you.-- The website reference that comes with the Deluxe edition is completely Archaic and poorly organized.--The search feature on the website that comes with the deluxe only allows for information on people seeking POETRY submissions. And another 50 recent publishers etc are listed but also poorly organized and not searchable.-- Regarding the guide itself, they should call it the Magazine, Trade Journal, and Contest, Writer's Market Edition so if that is what you are looking for you know this is the right edition to buy.--ONLY ABOUT 51 PAGES OF AGENT LISTINGS out of the 888 pages.--386 pages taken up by listings for Magazines and Trade Journals. 132 pages of contests and awards. Another 44 of glossary and Index. Approx 107 pages at the beginning of advice you can find by doing a quick google search. That takes about 669 pages of the 888. About *75%*--144 of publisher listings.-- They need to be much clearer about what types of agents and publisher listings, not just *how many* listings, comes with the website membership and in the guide. They need to be clearer about which website membership will allow you searchable access to exactly what kind of publisher and what kind of agent, not just how many.

To echo another review: The website reference that comes with the Deluxe edition is awful. The search feature appears to be limited only to the poetry category only. About 20 recent publisher additions are listed, but it is not possible to use specific criteria for a search of publishers. What a disappointment. I e-mailed customer service 3 days ago and no one has responded. A call to Writer's Digest 800 number says they are unavailable due to training!
