This book is a light overview of basic Buddhist principles of the threefold training. The author is obviously, as can be gleaned from the depth of his writing, an advanced practitioner; therefore the book has a lot of practical advice about meditation and techniques, while still respecting the traditional structure of virtue, meditation, and wisdom, leaving nothing out, as many Buddhist books today skip over "purification of virtue" and go right to insight meditation instructions (although virtue is implied). The section on the former is very valuable; each precept has the abstinence paired with a positive quality to be developed in its place; for example, avoiding lying while telling the truth and keeping one's commitments to other people. As the author says, fulfilling the precepts in this way already provides a fair depth of spiritual practice before even starting meditation. Also included in the purification of virtue section are the other monastic tenets of this stage, ie restraint of the senses, reflection on the requisites, and so on. Very accessible language and brings this teaching to life. The meditation instructions that follow are described in very clear depth and are very practical and inspiring and almost authoritative. The book respects the classical seven stages of purification but while it provides some descriptions of the different "insight knowledges", (stages of meditation practice) it doesn't go into too much detail and description about those (see "Manual of Insight" (Mahasi Sayadaw) and "Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha" (Daniel Ingram) for that). But again, it has a lot of practical advice and technique and is a very good resource to respect, favor, and practice with. The author describes the attainment of the four stages of ariya realization so it's likely has has personal experience of them (ie he's a "noble one").The author relates practices from all four foundations of mindfulness to different stages of the practice, as he has developed these alignments over his decades teaching meditation to students. You don't have to practice those exact correspondences but he has a very good section about meditation on the repulsiveness of the body and cemetery meditations you won't find almost anywhere else. These meditations are very powerful and recommended to overcome sexual lust and excessive attachment to the body.Lastly, it should be mentioned that though the author mentions the jhanas briefly, this book takes the "dry insight" approach to meditation, using the breath as the primary object but being aware of other parts of the body & mind as they present themselves to attention. The description of secondary objects of attention is lacking; I would recommend "The Way of Mindfulness" (Soma Thera) and "The Four Foundations of Mindfulness" (Bhante U Silananda) as complements to this book describing what should be meditated on and how when meditation comes to another object of meditation (the breath meditation is described in beautiful detail, though, but it's clearly, as described in the Canon, not all there is to the practice).Of course, I have to recommend "Mindfulness in Plain English" as another complementary resource that contains a lot of practical advice and information for structuring and maintaining an insight meditation practice focused on mindfulness of breathing. Lots of advice and tips for starting a practice and dealing with problems, distractions, and lack of concentration when you (almost inevitably) encounter them in your mindfulness of breathing practice. The current book is somewhat lacking, also, in that regard.Definitely one of your best books to keep on hand and to be constantly & continually mindful of.
it's great for a vipassana approach, enjoy it.just be forewarned it is NOT a commentary or guide to the visuddhimagga which is what it was supposed to be under it's original title: "swallowing the river ganges: a practice guide to the path of purification". "path of purification" is the english translation of "visuddhimagga". this is why i bought it and was sorely dissapointed.however it sticks to a visuddhimagga progression to explain vipassana/insight meditation practice and for that purpose it is really great!
practical and understandable
Very interesting book. Needs to be read very carefully!
I just finished this book, and wow, it was fabulous. What I liked in this book apart from other books I've read on meditation is the focus on how we can use meditation to see things as they really are, to see impermanence, to see how the mind and consciousness create an illusion of a self, and how to eventually get past that and to enlightenment. This book also addresses the fears we face, the apprehensions we experience as reality is revealed. I found this especially helpful, as I am facing some of those fears myself. Lastly, the author gives wonderful descriptions of how enlightened beings view the world and live out the rest of their lives. This book is small, but it's a must read! I've ordered the author's meditation workbook Journey to the Center, and am looking forward to using it. Though, I don't believe you need the latter. There are several chapters in this book that give really great step by step instruction for insight meditation. This is a book I will reread several times.
This book is the same book as Swallowing The River Ganges only with a new chapter at the end. Both books are fine books for learning meditation, particularly Buddhist Vipassana (Insight) meditation.
The language is clear, easy to understand, and it has techniques that I was able to apply immediately to to my practice. Highly recommended!
