I purchased this book set for my 2 year old grandson and they are a HIT! He loves reading the books with his big brother and mom, and is quickly learning the stories so he can follow along. The books are sturdy enough to stand up to a couple of rambunctious boys - another plus.
I bought this book to add some variety to my three year old son's bedtime book collection. At this point, I am looking for books that aren't too long or too complicated before bedtime and will hold and engage my son's interest, hopefully leading to questions for him so he gets used to exploring the world around him. This book fit that bill.It's a handful of pages long with short and simple rhymes so that Mom or Dad doesn't have to spend a half hour reading before bed. The pages have soft pastel colors and cute drawings of all kinds of dinosaurs. The rhymes are short and sweet--most pages focus on opposites: "Dinosaurs weak. Dinosaurs strong."The only reason I deducted a star is because one of those differences set up a really unfair comparison of looks, which is the opposite of how I'm striving to teach my son to be kind. "Dinosaurs cute, and dinosaurs not" with a picture of some "ugly" warty dinosaurs. Thankfully, my 3 year old said immediately, "Those dinosaurs are cute. I love those dinosaurs." I'm not sensitive about a lot of stuff, but I don't want my son to ever feel bad if he grows up to have looks contrary to the "norm" or to make others feel bad, so avoid or modify that page if that's something you're teaching your kids.
This set of 3 Boynton books costs about $12 on Amazon, and buying any 2 would cost the same price. You basically get a free book. This particular set includes 2 of my top 4 Boynton books - Barnyard Dance! and Pajama Time! (the other 2 being Happy Hippo, Angry Duck: A Book of Moods (Boynton on Board) and Hippos Go Berserk). Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! is OK, but I won't complain since I basically got it for free!Barnyard Dance! is wonderful. It's the story of an animal square dance with pigs, ducks, cows, chickens, etc. promenading and swinging around the room. It's super-fun to read and has a wonderful rhythm and beat, and I feel like a square dance caller whenever I read it (which it turns out is a very nice feeling to have). I think the fact that it makes me behave silly and enthusiastically makes the book resonate more with my daughter.Pajama Time! is also a good one. I have some trouble figuring out the rhythm (as other reviewers have noted as well), but it's still fun to read and very silly. Basically, this book is a celebration of the pajama and going to bed ritual. It is lost on my 10-month old, but I have a feeling the "Pajammy to the left! Pajammy to the right! P.J." will become an important going-to-bed-mantra in our household when my daughter gets a bit older. I sort of imagine the Menomena song from the Muppets as I read it.I do not think Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! is one of Sandra Boynton's best, in all honesty, but it is fine as a throw in (essentially, it's free with the other two) and kids like dinosaurs so I'm sure it will be appreciated by my daughter when she's a bit older. This was the first Boynton book I ever read and I really didn't get why people like her so much (very basic, "Dinosaurs big, and dinosaurs small" type stuff), but then I read some of her other books and grew a fondness even for this one by association.
Classic! I got these for my little nieces after enjoying reading them to my (now grown) boys years ago. Unlike other kids' books, when your little says, "Again! Again!" well, no problem, because these are FUN to read to them! Sandra Boynton also has a Page on Facebook and I suggest you "Like" it because she puts very cute cartoons up a few times a week!
My kids LOVED Sandra Boynton books so much that now I buy them as gifts for anyone having babies. They're cute, sturdy and silly, perfect for adding silly songs and sound effects to which might have been y kids favorite part. The only 'problem' is my kids never wanted me to stop reading them! You can easily read several at bedtime. I highly recommend any of her books. Our favorites were The Going To Bed Book, Barnyard Dance, and Moo, Baa, LaLaLa!,
My son loved loved to read Sandra Boynton books together when he was little and I purchased this set for my first grandchild to carry on the tradition. I love her gentle humor and hilarious illustrations which make them as fun to read for the grown ups as it is for the kids. Very, very highly recommended.
Short, sweet, and a treat to the kids. They like the brief words and pace of the pages as much as I do. Now writing a book about distant family relatives story would be a near universal need. Maybe I'll copy her cute format. Or maybe I'll let her do it right.
This is our second copy of this book (to give to a friend). It was a favorite of both our kids. They got to know the story well and can turn the board book pages without ripping. Every parent needs this book
My three-year-old son absolutely loves the going to bed book by the same author so I bought this book hoping he would like it. He absolutely does I would say it is his second favorite book, second to the going to bed book! We have a couple other Sandra Boynton books now, the dinosaur Dance one, and the Barnyard Dance 1, he still doesn't like the latter 2 as much as this book, and of course the going to bed book.
