This encyclopedia is of the people in the industry ONLY. Their movies are listed under their names. You cannot use this so-called encyclopedia for hunting up info on actual films. However, if you want to be in the movies, this would be invaluable to learn about the people in the industry. It's just that it is not made to be a dictionary or encyclopedia of films. Its title would have been more accurate and honest had it been "A Complete Guide to Actors, Directors, Screenwriters, and the People Who Make Films." If you want a guide to actual films, then get Leonard Maltin's "2014 Movie Guide." It lists about 16,000 films, old and current. One thing I'd like to see in Maltin's guide, though, is the names of the characters in the film which each actor portrays. It lists the director, the major actors, and a brief summary of the movie plus critical comments. It also rates each movie with a four-star system. I say all this because if you checked into the encyclopedia with this title, you were probably looking for something more like Maltin's book.

12/14/2013 5:48am The Film Encyclopedia Sixth EditionI have been buying this book since 1981, I bought the Hard cover Edition back then. This film book has mini-bio's of actors, directors, producers, crafts men in all of the technical film fields and it attempts to give a thorough overview of their body of work (their film credits over the decades). Some bio's are more in depth than others, it all depends on who it is they are reviewing. I have relied on this book so much over the years that it has sat by my book post for handy reference. I have questioned some of the opinionated text on some of the actors, they have a decidedly bias view on a few well-known actors, the authors downplay their contributions to the film history with a very dismissive and unfavorable attitude. Overall, the book is full of facts about all the major and minor studios, which I have had a keen interest in, how they were formed in the early years, the good years and the difficult years. For instance, the decimation of a great studio like MGM and the rise of a small studio like Walt Disney. Throughout the book, we have definitions of film terms that we see at the end of every movie with the film credits. I like this book.

I keep this by the chair that I sit in most to watch TV. When I am watching an old movie and the players come up, I look up the ones that I don't know anything about. It's neat to learn about some of their experiences, and sometimes surprised at some of the tragic ends. Some were trained professionals, some just starting out needing a job or doing a friend a favor. Some started out as producers/directors in the silent era, then changed to acting in the talkies. I wish they had an even more updated version. The only thing that I do not like about this is that some actors that I have seen are not listed; these people are seen time and time again in films.

Great book if you want to know about old movie stars. It tells you about there history and listing of movies. This edition is a little older. I had one similar to this but it had pictures, would be nice if future editions did same.

If you love movies you should have this book. I won't say you MUST have it, but it is great when you can't some film that some actor or actress was in that you saw years ago. It contains a lot of biographical information plus technical terms.

Great resource, but extremely bulky haha

Essential! Best of its kind. Lousy paperback binding, however.

Everyone knows the Film Encyclopedia is the Bible about films, directors, actors etc. I have a much-thumbed copy that I believe is the 2007 Edition. I resent the fact that, unlike listings in years past, this one does not clearly specify the publication date. I want to buy the update when it is available, but I don't think this is it??Keit Martin

What No One Tells the Bride: Surviving the Wedding, Sex After the Honeymoon, Second Thoughts, Wedding Cake Freezer Burn, Becoming Your Mother, Screaming about Money, Screaming about In-Laws, etc., by Marg Stark

From Library Journal

Stark (Timeless Healing, LJ 5/15/96) has written a readable self-help guide for brides-to-be and newlyweds who are trying to adjust to this often anxiety-ridden passage in life and to solve the consequent identity crisis. Chapters touch on wedding postpartum, handling money squabbles, falling prey to stereotypes, timing pregnancies, and communication and criticism in a marriage. The text is interspersed with comments from the 50 (mostly white, middle-class) women whom Stark surveyed and interviewed. The result is a "feel good" book whose aim is to reassure newlyweds that their fears and anxieties are normal. Much of it reads like a woman's magazine article, offering somewhat simplistic advice: "breath deeply, and believe that your venture into love will succeed." But Stark does have a clear, readable style and a reassuring sincerity in drawing from her own life as well as others. A bibliography of about 14 books (mostly other self-help books) follows the text. Recommended for public libraries.AAnn Babits Grice, East Brunswick P.L., NJCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I thought this book was slightly helpful and had a fairly good perspective. It is a little fluffy-- advice is really only given in a few bullet points with a few scant examples, but if you were in the same situation it might help lighten up your perspective. I am reading this after being married for 2 years and found that I had gone through pretty much every situation mentioned, which was nice. But if I read it at the time it wouldn't have given as much help as I would have wanted. That being said, I am in her target audience (been single many years, living on my own, professional, married in 30s). If you are not in this group a lot of the struggles will not apply to you. Also if you are not in the independent, feminist, I'm doing it my way, you can't make me your little wifey kind of attitude, this book will seem weird. If you are more traditional, have long wanted to be an old fashioned wife, or don't seek the "equal partnership" she keeps talking about, this book isn't really for you. Its more for the later-married-feminist to read so she won't feel bad about how she's going crazy being newly married and having to share for the first time lol. I'd only recommend this book to a few of my friends and just for entertainment really.

I will be honest and say there are not many books out there (that I could find) about the emotional transitions of the engagement/wedding process. Of the three books that I read (the others being "the conscious bride" and "emotionally engaged") this book felt the most grounded to me. Probably because outside of the first few chapters the author does not talk about wedding planning. Stark really focuses on recognizing what emotions we may be going through and some ideas for dealing with it all. The truth is, that for me, the best part of the book is that it reminds me that I don't have to walk into my marriage knowing how everything is going to turn out (who's going to do the dishes, take out the garbage, how often will we have dinner together). With time, patience and talking my husband-to-be and I will figure it all out. To me, this is immensely helpful.Just a note on the poor reviews:*The author does not condone a fling or adulterous behavior. As far as I understood, she was sharing one bride's experience and that bride seemed to regret it. Either way, this is one line of the entire book and did not stop me from reading the whole book.*Stark does talk about her own marriage a lot. She's sharing her own experience and I take in all she says with a grain of salt.*As for whinny... maybe I don't see it because the other two books gave so much more permission to act out, but I didn't see that here. I only saw Stark trying to sort through her emotions and trying to make sense of them.

I love this book. Honestly, I don't think I would have understood what I was getting myself into had I not read this before I got married. I really do think this is a must read for all brides to be. I bought one for my best friend who just got married, and I intend on buying a copy for every single friend of mine who decides to tie the knot. WORTH THE READ! It came in promptly and was in better condition than I imagined it would be. Very happy with my purchase.

I didn't find this book helpful and returned it. A lot of the information I found in here was personal experiences, ideas of what to watch for, and some general ideas of what to talk about before the wedding. It's like a "be prepared for this in the wedding/marriage." The reason I didn't find it helpful is it was full of all the things we always hear about being a bride and wife. There wasn't really "new" information in it. And while it sort of addresses how to combat some of the things that come up, I just didn't feel it helped me in any way.

This is a good book for those of you women about to get married and feeling a little overwhelmed by all the changes about to take place in your life. Marriage is an identity change for sure and this is a good way to ease your mind. I had no doubts about my decision to get married, I was just overwhelmed by whether or not I had what it took to be a good wife (and what does that mean anyway?). This book made me see that my anxieties were normal, but that I could totally get through this and everything was going to work out. As a postscript, I have been married for more than 2 years now and it has unquestionably been the best experience of my life. Seems funny that I was so worried back then, but I was!

I was very disappointed in this book. I didn't think it was funny or shared funny stories and couldn't relate to any of it at all. I can't even remember the highlights of the book and I just finished it last night ! I thought the advice was sketchy and incomplete, there are dozens upon dozens of references to other books that made me feel as if I should be reading those books instead of this one. I thought I would feel enlightened after this book but it didn't offer that at all. It has a few interesting points but only dabbles on them before shifting to a new topic that seems off the track. I felt the author was stretching in some of her stories - she had a story and would mold her story into some sort of advice that didn't seem to really fit. It was difficult to get through, I found myself skipping entire pages just to get to the point.I'm getting married in a month and don't feel as if this book offered me any insight to what is on the horizon for me.

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but this book really didn't help me sort out my pre-wedding thoughts. A few months before my wedding, I began to feel somewhat nervous about leaving my single life behind and "becoming another person." I bought this book hoping that it would offer advice and some reassurance that my feelings were shared by other brides. While it did indeed indicate that my sudden identity concerns were common, I found that most of Stark's advice was based on her own marriage, with a few tidbits thrown in from a few interviews she had done with several young brides--although most of it is common sense. I found myself often thinking that I was reading Stark's autobiography. That said, it does have some good pointers and a few good stories that a lot of brides can relate to.

Review

"I was able to find my voice, and to find tears and to find levels, because I was able to have a safe place to go, that I could come back from. With your technique, in character prep, when I visit a character's life, her past and create an event good or tragic - that belongs to her. I don't take ownership of that pain with me. I don't take it on as my own...So this allows me not to be scared to go there, which allows me freedom as an actress to do anything, because I don't own it. It belongs to my character."-Amy Adams"Working with Warner was a revelation. I doubted that I could ever work without "observing" and judging every moment. I will be forever grateful [to Warner] for helping me get back to the joy of living in the spontaneous truth of every scene."-Kyra Sedgwick"I've been working with Warner Loughlin for years. Not only has she helped me become a better actor, but she's also helped me truly enjoy this work in ways I never imagined."-Ryan Reynolds"Before I started working with Warner on the technique, I felt like acting was just something that I could some days do, and some days not do. It was only through doing deep emotion with detail on each of the characters I got, that I could act everyday how I wanted to, because I ended up knowing the character inside and out. The thoughts are no longer my own, but the characters', so I don't have to work as hard during the scenes. Now being on set and being the character is fun and never feels pushed. I love the technique and it has helped me immensely." -Sosie Bacon"I met Warner over 10 years ago. She has coached me through comedy, drama, and even life! She has not only given me tools to be better at my job, but tools to be 100% confident through the process."-Emma Roberts"Warner's Technique has become part of my creative process... It's simply the most intuitive way for me to find a character's base human emotion. Warner worked with us on Disney's Frozen for many months and helped us create truthful characters... I've never felt so comfortable animating a character before and I think the sophistication in the performance in the film speaks for itself." -Lino DiSalvo, Head of Animation for Disney's Frozen

I just finished reading this book and I love it. If you’ve read Susan Batson’s book, you’ll find that it shares the basic core, which is working from ‘The Need.’ However, as Warner points out, if you work from your own ‘Need,’ you’ll never really be the character, but rather, another version of yourself. BRAVO!You’ll learn how to create such a powerful backstory by looking for personality patterns, among many others, that will connect you to your character in such a way that you will simply click with the lines, the character, and all other aspects that acting requires.I highly recommend this book. And, NO, I’m not affiliated with the author in any way, shape, or form.About me: I’m a full-time actor living in Los Angeles. I’ve been acting for 35 years. I’m currently working on a show called, “The Last Legacy” and will be working on another one called, “Hotel Scarface’ due next year.

Wow, Real Insights. The shortest chapter in the book, Base Human Emotion, is worth the purchase price. Useful on many levels.

Great reference for aspiring actors

Let's not get crazy. The book is fine. But is it the promised revolution? No. What is the technique? A clear, commonsense reading of given circumstances that the actor then extrapolates into imagined memories that help create and justify a pattern of behavior through the use of a "Base Human Emotion." While the book poo-poos the use of objective in the very first pages, the "Base Human Emotion" is no more or less than a simple objective, i.e. "the need for order" or "the need to be seen" or "the fear of conflict" which translated to need is "the need for peace."This all leads to the creation of a detailed, imagined memory that justifies the Base Human Emotion. But this isn't revolutionary. Lawrence Parke wrote extensively about this in his acting book in the 70's, and called it a "Neurosis Provoking Moment." And he got it from Vaktanghov. So - nothing new or revolutionary. Sorry. So, if you want another take on how excavation of given circumstances can lead an actor an imaginative implication with the text and the role, go for it. This book is a fair account of one kind of process. But if you're looking for the technique that will change how acting is taught for "generation to come!!!!!!!!!" Well... not quite.

I bought two of these wonderful books because as a director I have worked with many of Warners' students and have been so impressed by their acting ability, being able to get to the place and emotion that I need them to get to, and their professionalism, that I wanted one to keep on hand and one to give out to promising young actors that I run across.

An Entertaining book, that’s helpful and informative

This isn't just for actors (although I can only imagine that it would help a bunch). This is for anybody who has to go out and do something publicly - music artists (Luke Bryan, anyone?!), politicians (she doesn't kiss and tell, so we don't specifically who) and blockbuster Oscar winners (Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, etc.! The screen writers and those behind Disney Animation lean on her and her technique as well to create realistic characters. What a relief to understand if you "do your homework" as a performer, the passion need you will be there...no going back to your worst memories to find tears and angst for a closeup shot. Loved that she came to Nashville and did an event at Parnassus Books! She's as accessible in person as her book is. I found this very helpful and will take tips away for my own public appearances.

Thank you first of all to NetGalley and Howard Tilley for letting me peruse this wonderful new addition to my acting technique books. I am always in the market for good, really good, books on acting techniques. This is perfect for my theatre students. They will revel in the direction this book takes them in. It's short in length but to the point! I love the first important sentence, and I am quoting..".. Where is it written to be a gifted actor, you must be filled with rage or pain or strife." I fell in love with the author from here to the end. How heathy and fresh is this thinking!!! This book teaches one how to act like not and not become as well as learning how to get out of one's way. BRAVO to Warner Loughlin!!! FINALLY, a really really really fantastic book for actors and acting students!!!! I can't wait to order lots!!!

“The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” is a bitter and angry novel about Cold War spies that refuses adamantly to glorify or glamorize their activities and that digs beneath the patriotic ideologies in the name of which secret agents act to uncover the morally troubling effects their plots have on real people. It begins with a scene of maximum tension at the Berlin Wall. Alec Leamas, a British agent responsible for a network of spies in East Germany who are being rounded up, is waiting in a checkpoint in West Berlin, hoping that the last of his agents will be able to escape. After that agent gets shot down before his eyes just before crossing the border, Leamas retreats to London in a fog of bitter disillusionment. The rest of the novel narrates an increasingly complex plot hatched by the Circus, the British spy agency Leamas works for, to recover from the elimination of their spy network by getting back at the German spymaster responsible - Mundt. The plot begins with Leamas acting the part of a disgruntled agent, shortchanged for his service to his country and vulnerable to defection. He is contacted by agents for East Germany and agrees to supply them with information, but not before he takes a job in a library where he meets and becomes lovers with Liz Gold, a character who will come to represent the innocent bystanders who get pulled into the world of morally questionable espionage with tragic results.Almost everything that happens in this novel is morally questionable on both sides and that is what provides a good bit of the intellectual stimulation of the book. John Le Carre always keeps the big picture ideology within the frame of the story by having his characters invoke Communist ideology alongside ideas of Democracy. Without going too deeply into political science, politics is always a reasonable topic of conversation here whether it’s pillow talk between Alec and Liz or a discussion of their greater mission between Alec and his Communist counterparts. But Le Carre’s focus is always on real people and he loves to explore the way that the idealism of the East and the West get twisted and distorted in their effects on both those spies who must compete aggressively for their “side” as well as the innocent people who are just doing their jobs. At one point Alec refers to this as “turning the plan into people,” in other words, to achieve some results in intelligence work, agents must be used and people will die and these deaths flatly contradict the western democracies’ ideological support for the freedom of the individual. These moral concerns fit neatly into a novel which is full of betrayals and double-crossings. The way information is doled out as the plot unfolds changes the way you see the characters and what you make of their motives but it all circles back to the Berlin Wall and an ending which parallels the opening.Leamas’s bitterness proves to be wholly justified, but his downfall is brought about by his inexplicable hunger for “operational life.” His embittered attitude is perhaps most directed at his own profession, one to which he is drawn like a magnet. Of spying he has this to say: “What do you think spies are: priests, saints and martyrs? They’re a squalid procession of vain fools, traitors too, yes; pansies, sadists and drunkards, people who play cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten lives.” It’s a great diatribe which encapsulates the mood, the atmosphere, the tensions, and the overriding philosophy of this novel.Coming in from the cold has many meanings here. Leamas comes in from the cold when his East German network gets wrapped up and he flies back to London, he comes in from the cold when he leaves the Circus to work at the library as a discarded alcoholic former spy, he comes in from the cold when he agrees to sell information to the East Germans, and finally he comes in from the cold when he ends up back at the Berlin Wall in the final scene. With shifty characters, a torturous plot, and a warm core of humane sympathy this novel is an entertaining and philosophical spy novel for the thinking reader.

Although I have read many of the spy stories written about the era of the Cold War, John le Carre was not among the well-known authors in my library. This book once again crossed my path, and this time I decided to purchase it. It is easy to see why it was acclaimed when it was published in 1963, and the taut storytelling makes one wish for more writers to emerge from the same mold.Lovers of spy stories should be warned that this is not the fantastic world of James Bond nor the incredible action tale of a Jason Bourne. Mr. le Carre's novel is dark and moody, and takes the time to allow readers to thoroughly absorb each scene. Although it is not a 300 or 400 page book, it is not a book to be read quickly or skimmed. If you do, you will miss out on key elements of the story and the ending will have a different impact for you.The last part of the book picks up the pace, and the twists and turns are unexpected, jarring, yet totally believable. The last chapter of the book is not your typical ending, yet it encapsulates the mood of the entire story. Not to be missed is the "Fifty Years Later" section, an introduction to the book written by the author for the 50th anniversary of the initial publication. It is amazing that the novel many folks feel is the ultimate spy story was viewed by Mr. le Carre as just the opposite. Sorry, no spoilers here...it is an interesting addition to the book, and I encourage everyone to read that before beginning the book. Five stars.

The classic spy novel that allowed John le Carre to write full time for the rest of his life does not disappoint. From start to finish it engaged my attention. Having read in the blurbs where Malcolm Gladwell said he had read it every five years from the age of fifteen and that it was only at the third reading that he really understood it, I was keen to grasp the outcome fully and believe I did. The well communicated atmosphere of the Cold War and the time shortly after the Berlin Wall had segregated East and West Berlin acts as the darkly oppressive scene setting. Although, George Smiley, the main character of le Carre's several later novels is only briefly revealed, Alec Leamas fills this tome with his world-weariness and brief hope and joy in the face of a duplicitous secret service that hints of the sort of world we were and are now very much aware of living in where multitudes of shades of grey exist and expediency and deeper, darker motives drive governments and their ever more secret intelligence arms: with a hellish or purgatory-like atmosphere. People remark that le Carre will be widely read in future generations. I can well believe it. Superbly written and a great introduction to the le Carre world we are seeing more and more of in film and television including the recent gripping "The Night Manager"

To start off, I love the coloring book. It's great for both adults and children. The one thing I was disappointed about, was the 26 x 2, apperently it means you get the same design twice. I was hoping it meant 2 designs for every letter, unfortunately it's just the same page twice.

I was hoping there would be signs for each letter. It's really mandala style circles with a letter inside and at each corner of the square page. Not really ASL. more like alphabet

It has beautiful pages. I gave this as a gift to a mother who has a deaf child.

Love it. My ASL students love having something to color

Review

“One of the truly great Russian novels of [the twentieth] century.” —New York Times Book Review“The book is by turns hilarious, mysterious, contemplative, and poignant . . . A great work.” —Chicago Tribune“Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita is a soaring, dazzling novel; an extraordinary fusion of wildly disparate elements. It is a concerto played simultaneously on the organ, the bagpipes, and a pennywhistle, while someone sets off fireworks between the players’ feet.” —New York Times “Fine, funny, imaginative . . . The Master and Margarita stands squarely in the great Gogolesque tradition of satiric narrative.” —Newsweek“A wild surrealistic romp . . . Brilliantly flamboyant and outrageous.” —Joyce Carol Oates

Before you dive into this review, know this. I'm a native Russian, and a writer, and I have just completed a feat of rereading the novel in Russian and reading first Ginsburg and then Pevear & Volokhonsky translations, back to back, to compare. And Ginsburg's translation will give you the best feeling for the language, the culture, and the story. It's the bomb. This translation left me in tatters, it didn't speak to me as Bulgakov, it even impoverished his style for me. The rating you see is for the novel itself, which is the work of art. Now, to the review itself. The first time I read The Master and Margarita in Russian, it was, out of all places, in Berlin. I was a teenager, and I lived in Berlin with my father and his new wife and my half-sister, because my father was a writer and a journalist and was sent by Soviet Union to Berlin to be the correspondent for a large Russian newspaper agency. I remember reading the book so vividly, that even today every detail is etched in my brain like a colorful photograph. The soft bright chair I sat in, with my back toward the window, the book in my lap, the pages rustling, and the image of Margarita, most importantly, of her knee, the knee that's been kissed over and over and how it turned blue. And the cat, the black cat that could talk. That's all I remember, plus the feeling of fascination I got. And now, over 20 years later, I have read it again, after becoming a writer myself 2 years ago, not knowing back in my teens that I would ever write, but being struck by the genius of Bulgakov. And, my, oh my, rereading it now I understood for the first time what the book was about. I sort of thought of it as a fairy tale back in my teens, I felt something underneath it, but couldn't get it. I got it now, and I cried, I cried for Bulgakov, for his imprisonment as a writer in the country that oppressed him to the last of his days, and I cried because he refused to be broken, and because he has written a masterpiece, and I was holding it in my hands, reliving it like so many people, many many years after he died.As to the story. It's not just one story, and not even two, it's four. A story of love, and of darkness, and of life and death. There are four narratives, the love between Master and Margarita, the strange visitors and Satan who come to Moscow, the story of Moscow life itself, the city, the people, and the story of Yeshua in the ancient walls of Yershalayim. Each has its own flavor, breathes its own air, and weaves into one book that tethers on that notion that no work of art can be destroyed, "manuscripts don't burn", says Satan, and that's Bulgakov's pain, him against the system that wanted to crush him, and didn't. He escaped. The irony of the book is that, in some sense, it's autobiographical, and that makes it even more tragic. But the satire! Oh, the satire! I don't know how many times I snorted coffee and tea out of my nose, because I have this habit of drinking hot drinks while reading, curled up on the couch. So many memories burst on the scene, so many authentic Russian quirks and habits and characters, the wealth of which I have nearly forgotten over my 16 years in US, and which dazzled my mind like fireworks, albeit of course, because I was reading it in Russian, and I'm about to start reading two translations in English, one by Mirra Ginsburg, and another by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Because, if there was ever a book worth reading 5, 10, 20 times in a row, it is The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov, his last book written over the course of 10 years, and not quite completed… he narrated changes to his wife right up to his death. No matter. It is perfect. Read it.

I purchased this book because it was the only one of the 6 known translations into English which I did not have! "Master and Margarita" has been a favorite of mine for decades, one of the very few novels I have ever read more than once. For those who do not know, this is one of the many spin-offs of the Faust legend; it is a cult classic and has inspired works of music and art.Written 1928-1940, not yet completely finished at Bulgakov's death with the result that there are a few minor inconsistencies in some of the chapters of the second part. A final text was prepared in 1963 by the author's widow (being the not-completely-edited manuscript as it was when the author died), and it finally saw the light of day when published in a Russian magazine Nov. 1966 & Jan. 1967. However, that was in a censored version, with 10-15% of the text cut; uncensored versions, however, circulated in the Soviet underground. Russian versions of the complete text where published in France and Germany later in 1967. The first version published in the U.S.S.R. was prepared by Anna Saakyants in 1973, with some additions and changes, including passages Bulgakov had crossed out, but had not re-edited at the time of his death. Then, a new version by Lidiya Vanovskaya arrived in 1989 which was closer to the original 1963 typescript of the widow (eliminating certain passages added in the 1973 edition -- compliant with Bulgakov's wishes, but resulting in further inconsistencies). The sensation the original resulted in two English translations being quickly made and issued in 1967: Mira Ginsburg (considered a good translation, but from the censored text, so not complete), and Michael Glenny (of the uncensored version, but the translator appears to have taken some liberties with the text). Both these have appeared in several editions over the years, and both may still be available. Both have been praised and panned as to their accuracy by different reviewers. Not being able to read a word of Russian myself, I have had to take the word of others as to their respective accuracy. Glenny is considered to read much like Bulgakov wrote, but I have noted some passages which are too far off from those of other translators.Next was the version by translators Diana Burgin & Katherine Tiernan O"Connor (1995, based on the Vanovskaya, but also incorporating some needed passages from the 1973 edition), supposedly highly accurate and considered a far better job than the books which appeared in 1967. This was followed soon after by that of Richard Pever & Larissa Volokhonsky (1997, for Penguin, based on the 1963 typescript), also considered an accurate account. Despite much praise for the Burgin-O'Connor, I found it to be tough reading, the style just doesn't flow well for me, and I have come to question some aspects the translation. However, it does include a few added passages which Bulgakov had removed, but not yet corrected for, which make other things clearer. Of these two, I cannot say I prefer one over the other, but the Pevear-Volokhonsky appears to have better translations of certain words and a little bit better flow of the writing. Both have extensive end-notes which aid in understanding many of the literary and historical allusions. Despite the presence of better texts, Ginsburg and Glenny both read better than either of these and I find neither to be a joy.A somewhat obscure translation by a Michael Karpelson appeared in 2006 (based on the Saakyants edition, with the clarifying passages), which is now on Wordsworth Classics Master and Margarita (Wordsworth Classics). This one is certainly worth looking for as it in all ways, to me, has advantages -- choice of words, textual additions, sentence flow, etc. -- over the 4 which came before. Also has end-notes, but not as extensive as the other recent editions. It is my (present) top choice. And, then there is this one, translated by Hugh Aplin (2008, OneWorld Classics, now called Alma Classics). I am not sure which Russian version it is based on; an end-note states it is from a text approved by the Bulgakov estate (it does not observe the crossed-out material), published in 1996 and 2004; this may be based on a completely different text version entirely. I must admit, I have not yet read this cover-to-cover, but I have read sections/chapters and made comparisons with others, and this comes out very favorably and possibly reads better in some places than any of the others. One objection I have found to this version is that a number of Russian terms have been left untranslated, with no notes to explain their meaning (though, there are notes a-plenty in the back). The flow of the words is very good and provides a straight-forward reading. This translation I rate as one of the better ones.As a major fan of "The Master and Margarita", at this time I find anyone looking for an English translation of what is one of the greatest novels of the 20th Century (actually, what I consider the greatest novel of all time) should look to that of 1) Karpelson, though 2) Aplin is not far behind. Either one would do nicely if only a single translation is desired. Ginsburg could also be near the top, but her text was corrupt. Glenny is good for reading, but sort of out as a translation due to some odd liberties he took with the text. This leaves for 3) Burgin/O'Connor, then 4) Pever/Volokhonsky. However, none of these are really bad, very inaccurate, nor to be completely rejected. I now have all 6, and I'm keeping all of them. Also suggested: Another fine spoof on Soviet society -- Bulgakov's "Heart of a Dog".[later addendum to my above review: I have re-read the Burgin-O'Connor translation, and now have a greater respect for it. At least, this time, the story flow went better for me, and I was more comfortable with other aspects of it. My number one choice, however, remains Karpelson, now with Aplin and Burgin-O'Connor in a close tie for second place. Also, the Burgin-O'Connor might prove easier to find than the other two, though I am certain someone on Amazon would be able to supply. Read and enjoy.]2nd Addendum -- this one pertains to the Hugh Aplin translation here under review. I have now read it completely, and declare this translation to be excellent, perhaps even slightly preferable to the Karpelson. The reading of this is an easy-flowing joy, though one may expect to encounter some "Britishisms" that an American reader may not be familiar with. There are numerous passages which Aplin makes sharp and clear, where some of the other translations give turgid readings. Choice of words appears to be fairly literal, without creating some of the difficulties this sometimes brings about. This edition has end-notes, though not nearly as many as found in either Burgin-O'Connor or Pevear-Volokhonsky; but, also includes several photos of the author and Moscow scenes and an extensive biography of Bulgakov. A highly recommended translation, as is the Karpelson.
