We read this classic outloud in my high school class this year and my students could not believe how modern the themes were. Everyone can relate to the detective element (many critics claim this as the first true detective plot), the search for truth, the irony (the very definition of dramatic irony is Oedipus) and the gripping plot. I would also like to add that as always the Norton editions are by the far the best available. They have terrific background information and a great collection of pertinent essays. They make scholars out of just regular readers. If you never read Oedipus, buy it now!

Excellent condition. Some writing in it but since it's an English class it was actually helpful. I would highly recommend them.

It is doubtful that anyone needs a recap of the play OEDIPUS TYRANNUS, other than it is the dramatic reenactment of the moment Oedipus discovers that he is the murderer of his father and now husband to his mother. Longstanding member of the Western Canon, it is argued by some to be the greatest of the Greek tragedies extant. And, based on no more than the critical essays which accompany this Norton edition, it would seem that the way in which the play raises such issues as fate versus free will, the innocence or guilt of Oedipus, or what might be the deeper meaning of the play is as intriguing, puzzling, and verbiage-inducing as that concerning a certain Prince of Denmark.I'll not add to it, other than to say that I deeply felt the inherent power in the play, despite the fact that I probably couldn't verbalize exactly why even if I wanted to. OEDIPUS TYRANNUS strikes me as one of those peculiar works of literature--not unlike HAMLET--which seems rather plain and straightforward at the conscious level, but sets to vibrating some interior chord, and the dissonance between the two creates a kind of dialectic exchange which eludes synthesis. In other words, I don't know what the hell the play means, exactly, but I really liked it.As with all Norton Critical Editions, a corpus of essays follow the principal work, though if one were looking for someone to `explain' Oedipus to you, you'll likely be disappointed. Many of these essays have a very similar beginning to them: Thalia Feldman, `So complex are the problems of interpretation...'; C. M. Bowra, `...the surviving plays of Sophocles form so small a proportion of what he wrote that it is rash to generalize...'; R. C. Jebb, `A drama itself is the only adequate commentary on its persons'; S.M. Adams. `One of the penalties of any great work of art is that it lends itself to various interpretations'; and, my favorite, A. J. A. Waldock, `Possibly the best service a critic can render the OEDIPUS TYRANNUS is to leave it alone'. If Ms. Berkowitz and Mr. Brunner, translators and editors, hoped to impart the idea that there is little critical consensus concerning the play, they succeeded. In fact, several of the essays included here respond to one another, sometimes condescendingly so, which is a bit humorous, in its way, but not _necessarily_ helpful in assisting the reader to arrive at an interpretation that is satisfactory to them. But, that goes back to my point--the play is a sort of conundrum, and probably derives much of its power from it. Reduction would only rob it of its fascination.That isn't to say that the essays here are worthless--that will depend on what you are looking for. I confess, I WAS looking for explanation when I first started to read them, and for a moment, was frustrated that I wasn't seeing it. Once I discarded the idea that any explanation was forthcoming, I began to take the essays in the manner in which they were designed, and which was well summarized by the last lines of the last essay: `Our analyses are at best propaedeutic (introductory). They explain nothing essential, but do their work if they steer us to a fresh reading of the play with our visual and auditory imagination newly alerted'.This translation, despite its description as 'new', is copyrighted 1966, but was deliberately translated using 20th century idiom. Frankly, this was very welcome to me; after trying and failing to get very far into Lattimore and Green's translations of Aeschylus' Oresteia, I had begun to be afraid that the classics of Greek drama were closed to me without some form of intensive study. While this translation may not suit those readers already familiar with the play, I can easily recommend it to those who, like me, have been intimidated by the density of other translations.

This translation facilitates the modern reader's understanding of this crucial and difficult ancient play. What's most impressive is that this edtion includes really helpful information and criticism for the general reader and the scholar. Not only will students and teachers benefit from the lucid scholarship, but the general reader will be intrigued by the volumes of historical, psychological, and dramaturgical essays in this book. Even Oedipus would wish his eyes back to be able to read this translation.

MJ's previous book was an instant classic and exposed a lot of truths about entrepreneurship and the unhappy state of modern society in general. This book tackles many of the the same ideas from a different more in-depth angle, and takes it to another level for several reasons. For starters, it is side-splittingly, roll-on-the-floor, unrelentingly hilarious and entertaining (at least to my mind). To me, almost every single page is full of funny anecdotes and analogies. Listening to the Audible version of this is better than listening to a good HBO stage comedian, and far more useful. Second, the book makes a concerted effort to address the psychological barriers that I've come to believe are the biggest obstacles to entrepreneurship. As the Romans (apparently) understood, a proper slave doesn't need chains to remain in bondage...once conditioned, a person's attitudes and beliefs are far more effective tools of servitude. This applies not only to the poor, but to many of us who have successfully navigated years of 'success' milestones, and yet found themselves with a career environment that has not held up its end of the bargain. That's the reason for the title "Unscripted", to re-engineer years of ingrained and indoctrinated beliefs that won't really serve your dreams of success and freedom. Finally, this book is impressively in-depth and detailed. It doesn't (and can't) give you a specific formula for a successful business for your situation. But it works from a number of angles, over and over, chipping away at the roadblocks that will snare most of us who decide to go for something more. In that sense its a useful reference with some meaningful ideas and approaches to tackle challenges, many of which are not in The Millionaire Fastlane.If you're a cozy, happily employed person who is deeply satisfied with your weekend lifestyle, then this book is absolutely not for you. In fact, run away! Its only going to cause you trouble. But if you find yourself among the discontented 70%, stuck in traffic and depressed, profoundly disillusioned with your own past choices; pay close attention. Whining about the traps of our modern society will get you nowhere, and the true cause of your ills is not really the common scapegoats: politics, racial or class issues (although they have their moments). It's your mental framework and a lack of understanding of and experience with entrepreneurship. The truth is that America can be a truly great country for anyone, but its rewards mercilessly and relentlessly go to those entrepreneurs who deliver relative value. Provide real value to others and whatever limits you presume exist in your life (sex, age, race, upbringing, education) will rapidly vanish. In that sense, its a real hopeful step forward and a useful tool for many of us.Absolutely highly recommended, he's now among my favorite authors.UPDATE: I've now completed the book 3 times, and it only gets better. Each time I go through it I realize there are some useful pearls of wisdom in there that I had grasped conceptually but not completely faced (about myself). Some people might regard the material in this book as shocking. But what's really shocking is that here in the 'Land of Opportunity' after years and years of college and real world experience, this is not common wisdom. You don't hear this material anywhere. It should be Business 101, or Prosperity 101, Life 101.

If you had the choice between purchasing one of the popular financial “guru’s” books or this book Unscripted which would you choose? Not having read the authors previous book you might assume the popular “guru” book is a no brainer right? As wise ole Yoda said “Judge me by my size, do you?” For me and those who have read the author’s previous book the answer is clear – buy, read and most importantly apply the framework provided in Unscripted! This book is not only huge in size (416 pages) but more importantly it is huge in value it can provide to you and your future of breaking free of the “scripted” life. This isn’t a feel good book or “here is the 30 steps you need to do to become a millionaire and work from the beach when you want to” book. This is a book that helps you see how our life has often become one big “scripted” voluntary slavery where we work all week for two days off with a mountain of debt over our heads. Realizing our current reality is worth the price of the book alone but it goes on to showing you the framework to break free and lead an “unscripted” life. There is so many high value wisdom nuggets provided in this book but some of my favorites are:• The Careless Whispers from you Soul• Action faking vs action taking• Sunday evening is the ultimate test if you are leading a scripted life – how do you feel about going back to work Monday morning?• Don’t be a “Time Prostitute” – time is scarce money is not!• Don’t be part of the “herd” headed to slaughter!• Hyperreality and observational bias (Jedi Mind Tricks)• Being a producer vs consumer – “you can’t be owned by what you own”• The “pain of discipline or the pain of regret”• Micro-processes + macro-processes = success – no silver bullets just small habits focused• There are no shortcuts!• The “event” is the result of the “process”• Have a growth mindset• The Kaizen Principle• Getting rich isn’t done by desiring wealth it is in providing “perceived value” to others• “Perceived Value vs Actual Value”• “Luck vs Probability” and the “Gumball Machine” Brilliant analogy!• Investing and all the popular falsies/scams• Cancer Corollary – “do I have something I want and what will it cost me”• Autonomy (control) as the number one reason for our happiness! This is again worth the price of the book 10x over!• “How to create a business that changes your life” this is the framework!• The “CENTS” commandments again worth the price of admission!• “Expected Value” – holy cow batman this is good stuff!• From Process to Productocracy!• Best (13) Execution practices!• Lifetime Passive Income!• “The last business ever – if you want”Unscripted is a book that I read slowly because it is so jammed packed with valuable wisdom that you need to process. It is a book that I will re-read many times over taking more notes and putting actionable habits that move my life from the Scripted to the Unscripted! This is the one book I will give to all my kids and close friends!

If you want more out of your life, but feel trapped or that you can't succeed no matter how much you try, this book may just hold the breakthrough you've been looking for. There is no "formula" or "secret" that is revealed in the book - just a sobering and analytical look at the way societal norms and pressures can be affecting you without you even knowing it. Before you can release yourself from these "invisible chains" (the script), you must first make them visible. As the book keeps reminding you..if you want the same results as everyone else around you living a "normal life", then keep doing what you (and everyone else) is doing. If you want more, you are going to have to write your own script and find your own way to get there. This book serves as a guide to do exactly that.

Meh. Really sounded like a fascinating concept. But chapter after chapter goes nowhere and doesn't develop any cohesive points. A few interesting anecdotes thrown in here and there, but they are rare bright spots in an otherwise very dull and pedantic, overly long book.

This is a book about how people exploit the architecture and infrastructure of cities to abscond with other people’s property. Manaugh shows us both how the masterminds of burglary think outside the box “Ocean’s Eleven” style, as well as how the dim dull-wits and junkies botch burglaries in hilarious ways. In the process, the author also shines a light on the ways in which the law enforcement community has had to update its technological and tactical capabilities to counter these threats.The book contains seven chapters. The first chapter lays the groundwork, particularly through discussion of the aforementioned extremes. On one hand, there is George Leonidas Leslie, an architect turned bank robber who would build accurate mockups in order to accurately rehearse robberies, and--on the other hand--there is the guy who used a ghillie suit disguise in a rock and mineral museum (which, not unsurprisingly, featured barren rock displays [down-playing vegetation] such that the guy stuck out like a guy in a ghillie suit in a rock display.)Chapter 2 details what Manaugh learned about burglary and the fight against it through his interviews with law enforcement, and—in particular—the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) helicopter unit.The next chapter focuses on how different types of buildings are violated by burglars, and apartment burglaries are prominent in the discussion. This isn’t just about how they breach the building, but how they discover when no one will be home.Chapter 4 is entitled “tools of the trade” and it reflects upon the skill-set that Hollywood suggests is associated with burglars—i.e. lock-picking and safe-cracking--but which constitute a less common set of tactics than one might think. Burglars usually favor the messier / quicker approach of busting walls and locks.Chapter 5 deals with a number of issues under the rubric of “inside jobs” but one of the most intriguing is its discussion of those who don’t break in at all, but rather who hide inside the target building awaiting closing time.The penultimate chapter is about that ever-present concern of burglars, the getaway. And sometimes the secret is what Black Widow says in “Captain America: Civil War”: “The first rule of being on the run is walk, don’t run.” The final chapter is a wrap-up, including a conclusion to the George Leonidas Leslie story that was brought up in the first chapter.There are notes and citations at the end of the book. There are no graphics. I think this book could have benefited from graphics. However, the author displayed such skill with language and story-telling that I didn’t seem to notice (or care) at the time of reading. I suspect Manaugh didn’t want to present too much detail for fear of being seen as an actual manual for crime, which this clearly is not.I found this book fascinating, and think you would enjoy it if you have any interests in cities, security, civil engineering, architecture, or just have a healthy curiosity about how buildings and cities work.

I loved the premise and wanted to like the book but the writing was so ... somewhere between mediocre and bad ... I quit reading it about 25% in (and thus never attended the book club meeting that was discussing it). It wasn't grammar/ punctuation/ capitalization/ word choice type of bad writing, but rather an irritating choice of storytelling technique. Actually, it reminds me of those TV shows where before every & after every commercial they repeat the punchline that will be coming up at the end of the show, as if they can't trust the viewer to PAY ATTENTION TO THE STORYLINE long enough to remember on their own (or catch on if coming to the show part way in). Ugh! Don't recommend.A totally different thread is that it did succeed in helping me feel less safe.To his credit, though, many of the ideas and stories were interesting: I simply couldn't talk myself into continuing to suffer his style of storytelling ... which, I suppose, some might actually enjoy. Hey: lucky them.

Not great if you're a true crime buff. A Burglar's Guide to the City reads more like a 300 page architectural history thesis than a book about burglary.I get the idea the author wanted to communicate, that architectural design and burglary are mutually-influential on each other, but that's kind of a nebulous point to make, and not one that anybody would really argue against in the first place.The book is at its best when it's indulging in true crime anecdotes, describing famous burglaries, the burglars who got away with it, and the people who dovetail with either. Unfortunately it drops the ball several times by not paying off some of these anecdotes and just generally over-defining terms.

Like other reviewers here, I was off-put by the tedious writing... and what felt like filler material. As a buyer, I thought this was a great topic. I'm t thinking that's exactly what the writer thought as well. As the topic progressed, I began to sense that there was less to this topic than I had imagined. Similarly, I felt that the writer encountered the same ditch, thus defaulting to fulfilling his writer/deal obligations and getting out of Dodge as cleanly as possible.

As a former professional burglar and architecture enthusiast, I wanted to have more of a roundup of exotic crimes. Instead, we spend a lot of time on mundane things, like ride-alongs with the LAPD helicopter. The prose is often quite overwrought when it's not warranted. As the author says, the truth is that most burglary is mundane and not carried out by master thieves. That's true, but it's also not terribly interesting. Even the parts in which he explores the relationship between the built world and the criminals who find other ways to use it seem flaccid. I would have like more like the first chapter with its false doors and secret warehouses. The modern world has plenty to offer to the crime aficionado too, with all of the digital crime that happens. Digital crime often involves a large amount of breaking and entering, or at least clever distribution of thumb drives. That would have been interesting, had he touched on it. The author references the classic book by Harry Houdini - The Right Way to do Wrong, which sits on my bedstand. It's a much better book about the strange world of crime and expectations.

Though her explanations are sensible and she offers considerable anecdotal evidence, readers not well-versed in Eastern thought may be overwhelmed by the inordinate details of TCM (e.g., the five elementsAwood, fire, metal, water and earthAof nutrition, climate, food colors, etc.) and how to use them. To ease confusion, Prout recommends the best foods for particular patterns of imbalance and offers considerable anecdotal evidence. I purchased this book on the recommendation of my acupuncturist. I've been suffering from a variety of digestive issues, and other unexplained health symptoms. No other piece of literature (including the web) has offered me as much information on how to figure out what foods I, as an individual, need to stay 'in balance' - and what I should be avoiding or preparing differently before consuming. The East-West Nutrition Program" is a fitting subtitle because this book helps the average person grasp the concepts of traditional Chinese medicine in context with what we (or at least I) spent a lifetime knowing from the Western medicine context. I feel better than I have in 3 years and have shared this book with my son who has similar and different digestive/health issues, has modified his diet and is feeling better as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels they've reached a dead end with regard to resolving digestive (and other) issues. You have nothing to lose with this non-medicinal approach.

Oh my goodness. Where do I begin to say how much this book has helped me and my husband. We wereliving at the coast in San Diego where we had the May Grey, June Gloom weather. It wasn't a problem inour earlier years but by middle age, bad eating habits, overweight, lethargy, breathing problems we were ready to tryjust about anything new.Well, this book changed our lives because we could recognize ourselves in her descriptions and see the results of me being a Damp Heat and my husband Damp Cold. It all made sense. We changed our eating habits, moved to Palm Springs a dryer climate and now are a lot happier. We still aren't perfect but we are better than we were and every time I look at Linda's book I amreminded of the wisdom of both East and West and that I have the correct tools to apply. There is so much information in this book. It's one to keep as a reference. Thank you Linda for this change of life book and your dedication to optimal health.

It is a must read if you have any health or medical issues or if you are at all frustrated with your current eating patterns.The book is full of information, with every sentence seeming to contain a new nutritional idea or fact. All the facts and figures are incredibly well researched and documented. If you are new to the concepts in the book, you will find it easy to follow and understand. If you are already well versed in the Traditional Chinese approach to diet and nutrition you will find it a wonderful source of new information and a great addition to your reference shelf.

Excellent book

On the urging of my doctor to get my blood pressure and cholesterol down or face a lifetime of taking drugs, I went on Linda's program with amazing success. In 6 weeks of eating by her prescription in the book my BP went from 144/94 to 130/80 and my Cholesterol from 264 to 208. And my appetite is completely under control for the first time in my 44 years. I have lost weight, inches and my skin is clear and glowing. And I have escaped getting the colds that have plagued everyone around me at work. I find it easy to eat her way with a bit of planning. My doctor is amazed at the change in my health. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with overall health and weight problems. It's the first thing that has worked for me.

The author of this book provides extensive information about how to balance your diet from a combined Western/Asian perspective, however, the book would be more useful if she had provided comprehensive summaries of the information. She does give short summaries of specific sections, but since a lot of the information applies to several aspects of a person, a quick reference summary of types of people and their corresponding needs/solutions would be helpful. You are going to have to compile this for yourself, and it will be time consuming. I do think she gives useful information here though, so I would recommend this book.

About four years ago I was very ill. I had sinus infections, colds, and bronchitis just about every month for about a year and a half. I was stressed out at work and in my personal life, put on 30 pounds, and developed GI problems doctors were unable to explain. Tired of traditional western medicine prescribing costly drugs which made no difference and constantly being sick, tired, and unable to focus, I decided to consult a holistic healthcare practitioner. Unable to pay the cost to have a formal in person consultation (since my healthcare did not cover it), she referred me to this book.I felt like Linda Prout was reading my mind. Although the food choices she recommended were not at all what I was used to eating, I decided to give it a try. Within the first week I noticed a difference in how I felt. I lost 20 pounds in the first three months (without exercising) and have maintained a healthy weight since, with regular exercising and meditation. I eliminated stressors in my life as well. This book in so many ways saved my life. I have not been sick at all for the past three years. The acute asthma I developed at that time is nearly nonexistent. I enjoy the foods Linda suggests for my body type and have minimized the others which are not so good. I love it and swear by it!

Favorite book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to stop and think about the heavenly and other forces behind the scenes.

I have read and re-read "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" many times over since approximately 1990. The Pastor at the Church we were attending at the time, loaned them to me initially. I purchased a paperback copy at the time and read them again. Told my dad about them and then gave him a set since I knew he would read them more than once! When I saw them on Amazon' Kindle website, I purchased an electronic copy! These are AWESOME books and former Pastor, Frank Peretti, has written other Christian novels as well. I have read some but intend to read all.

Chilling. Gripping. This is true horror. 'Piercing the Darkness' exposes and illuminates the source of absolute evil. I pulled an all-nighter on this one.When school teachers in a small town begin teaching a new curriculum to their innocent, moldable students, the Fourth Grade class begins to manifest "spirit guides" -- and all Hell breaks loose. Literally.This is 'Good Vs. Evil' at its most fundamental. I'm not going to summarize this story because I'd reveal too many surprise plot twists that unfurl themselves like demon's wings as the novel progresses. Read it for yourself. If your soul isn't deeply perturbed by this book, then maybe you don't have one. Or maybe Someone Else is in control of it.Go on. I dare you to read it.

Bought this for my niece. I had read it shortly after college and thought she might enjoy it after having some discussions about the spiritual realm. Peretti wrote an enjoyable story that shows how all these forces play out in the lives of people through a mystery/thriller. Good thought-provoking book to have in your collection with the classic C.S. Lewis book The Scewtape Letters.

This Present Darkness was a very enjoyable book to read. Through the story, the author emphasized the importance and power of prayer which greatly effects the lives of people all around. The story portrays the unseen, heavenly actions of God and his angels, as well as the deceitful and conniving works of the Devil, who only works to destroy the saints of God. I personally would recommend this story to all ages of readers because it emphasizes the love of God towards his people, the power of God above Satan, and the need and importance of a praying Church of Christ. This Present Darkness reveals the truth that without prayer to God, anyone, Christian or non-Christian, can fall under the lies and deceptions of the Devil.

Powerful, compelling and captivating -- yet replete with spiritual observations and lessons. Yes, you can read a great book and learn spiritual truth as you read and I cannot recommend this book too highly. From teens to senior adults, this book will reinforce your faith while you struggle to put it down. The first time I read it was a Sunday afternoon, the day before my daughters left on church-related missions trips to Central and South America -- it inspired me to pray fervently for my daughters every day they were gone. Yes, they both returned home safely.

One of the best books I have read on Spiritual Warfare! Even though it is fictional, Peretti opens our eyes to the spiritual battle going on around us as Christians. The way he imagines the battle unfolding is very Biblical and thus makes reading passages like Ephesians 6 come alive. Though the book falls into the science fiction category I wouldn't say it is to strange or weird. I have read a lot of other Christian fiction books that are farther out there than this one. I would recommend this to every Christian! A Must Read

Wish I had read the Foreward before ordering this book. While I wanted a book from inspirational fiction, this author clearly delineates the type of Christianity he believes in: narrow, prescribed, militant. Anything that does not fit into his views are Satan's business. Sorry. I was looking for an author who was spiritual, not pedantic. Did not realize this in time to return the book. It will now go in the trash!

I have read this over and over again and will likely still read it again. Beyond entertaining, it awakens one to the reality of evil principalities over individuals, neighborhoods, organizations, cities and regions. It also shows the supremacy of the believer over evil, regardless of the wickedness of the unseen evil personalities or their position in the hierarchy of evil. It shows the weakness of evil, when we stand on God's word. It shows also that the devil and his cohorts are not nearly as powerful as they portray themselves to be. Jesus said, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given unto me." So the devil has none.I also love love love how the angels allow the demons to seem to be winning and then swing a surprise rout. Very like God to catch the crafty (the deceiver) in his own craftiness. The princes of this world go ahead and crucify Christ not knowing it's a trap. This book lets you see that God will have the final say, when we refuse to fear, we pray, we stand on His Word. God will contains evil no matter how pervasive it is, when believers step up to the plate. After all, it's His universe, He created the playing field.Satan fears a true believer who knows his or her rights in Christ. One true believer can change the spiritual climate of a city or a region. But the power increases exponentially when believers unite and we set aside all our theological or doctrinal differences and we just unite around Christ and Him crucified. That is when we become the body of Christ and the days of evil in our communities and cities and societies and economies are over.
