Interesting story which begins when a US Coast Guard cutter picks up two men floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean. The men tell the Coast Guard the charter boat they were on, which was headed for the Bahamas, had been taken over by pirates and the crew was dead. As the men and their stories were investigated nothing adds up. Missing and presumed dead was the Captain, his wife, his brother and best friend. The story is interesting and sad however, I was a bit bored by an overload of courtroom information which for me, is not really necessary unless there is a big surprise waiting to be unveiled. If you like true crime, you will enjoy this book.

A real page-turner, even though you already know "who dunnit." Recommended by a friend. The first true-crime I've ever read, and very well written.

I was a close friend of the couple who were murdered in this tragic event, and was glad to get some closure by reading and understanding what took place. The book did focus a lot more on the two perps and lacked much biographical information about the victims.

Great book. Compelling read. The author explains the legal intricacies of a trial in terms that all can understand. In addition to explaining difficult concepts well, she creates sympathy for the victims. I was left wanting to read more by this author. I know that she wrote another true-crime novel called "Biscayne Baby," and I read that as well. I would happily read other works by this author!

Very well written. Interesting read regarding a tragic story.

I bought this book to get the facts on the trial. My friend Kelley was one of the victims in this horrific crime. She was portrayed as the wife of Jake. I think more attention should have been paid to her as a person, not just as Jake's wife. I guess it gave the trial facts well enough, but it didn't even begin to touch on the loss of this lovely, kind, caring young women.

An interesting read about a horrible event. The murder's seem like a simpleton and a badly deranged person. The impact that their actions have had on everyone from their own families to the children of their victims is shown well in this book.It seems like the welfare of the children of the victims was not handled well by the Florida courts. I did find myself not terribly interested in most of the people in the book. I did find the description of the Florida courthouse, the actions of the Coast Guard and investigators to be interesting. Not my favorite book, but not too bad either.

Jake Branam loved the ocean. He spent his childhood years on the shores of an exclusive Florida island. As a grown man, with a wife and two children, Jake earned his living with it by offering fishing excursions on his boat The Joe Cool. When Jake is offered a generous price for a private charter to the Bahamas, he thinks it could be just the financial boost the fishing business needs.Murder on the High Seas by Carol Soret CopeBuy It Not On AmazonOn Sunday, September 23, 2007, Jake and his wife, Kelly Van Laar Branam, and crew members that included his half-brother Scott Gamble and best friend Samuel Kairy, set off for Brimini. Their paying guests were Kirby Archer and Guillermo Zarabozo, who claimed they were going to meet their girlfriends already vacationing there. But it turned into the charter cruise from hell. When it was over, Captain Jake, his wife, and crew were nowhere to be found and their passengers told a wicked tale of pirates and violence. In October, Patricia Ireland gave a thumbs up review to author Carol Soret Cope's book Murder on the High Seas: The True Story of the Joe Cool's Tragic Final Voyage about the murder of Jake, Kelly, Scott, and Sam aboard The Joe Cool at the hands of a violent pedophile and Cuban defector sidekick. Ireland's review inspired me to finally read a book that had been reading list since it's publication. This is an incredibly intense tale of murder at sea as well as that of bitter divorces and the ugly secrets they reveal when child custody comes into play. If Cope, a lawyer by trade, could have toned down the legalese just a bit, it would have been perfect. But on the plus side, the author does make the legal technicalities easy to understand for laymen.Don't misunderstand me, I definitely recommend Murder on the High Seas. I found it to be a well-written account of a disturbing tragedy, just a little more of the boring legal stuff than needed.
