I learned a lot of valuable information from this book, and it definitely helped reinforce and, more importantly, explain my trainer's comments. The illustrations are particularly helpful, and several of them show proper alignment, sequentially as in stop-motion, at different gaits. The descriptions of how and why one falls behind the motion of the horse, or gets in front of it, were particularly illuminating -- prior to reading this book, I had frequently fallen off rhythm, and within two lessons of reading Wright my instructor & I both noticed a significant improvement. Some of the text may seem elementary, and some of it may be outdated [e.g. the student's preference for riding with his stirrups at his heel notch], but it provides a solid basis from which to approach english riding.I've only read the first 2/3 of the book, but I've read that several times, and I think this is a fantastic resource. I had no problems with the Kindle version on my paperwhite model -- images, layout, and editing are all fine.
I was fortunate to ride with Gordon from 1955 to 1962 when I opened my own horse training business. I had the original of this book and lent it to a no longer friend who never returned it. When George Morris mentioned at his Wellington 2014 horsemastership clinic that this book was now out again with a foreward by him, I ordered it immediately and am so happy to now have it again. No matter where one is in the world of hunters/jumpers, and even dressage, this is a must read.
Wonderful book for people who are just starting with horses or for people like me that needed a refresher after being away from horsemanship for several years.
Wright emphasizes not getting ahead of yourself in order to build confidence and strengthen your experiences riding. He constantly reminds the reader to resist the temptation to ride horses that are not suited for their true level of skills and needs, as well as to not jump higher than the rider is really comfortable with.I can see how this would also be a good book for kids getting into horses because it has a nice overview of confirmation and basic horse care needs.
Very informative, excellent illustrations, just a great basic book to have in your collection - highly recommend for beginners or novice riders.
