As she gets closer to the answer she seeks, her mother becomes more and more unhinged by the horrors she hears about in her work. The climax packs a powerful emotional punch as the author dovetails Kim's personal odyssey with the pain, contradictions, and hopes of the country as it carries its devastating history into the future. The realities of the society are carefully and skillfully portrayed, so that Kim's story is truly the emotional heart of the book, and not a vehicle for ideas. Kim herself is a believable and likable character, and her relationship with Themba is tender and realistic. This is a fine book about one young woman's struggle with her mother, relocation, emerging maturity, and own racial prejudices after learning that her background is not what she thought. It is unfortunate that a strong swear word was included near the end of the book. I lent my copy to a South African friend who thoroughly enjoyed it too.

Craig did an excellent job of weaving together the details and the mystery of of the main characters' lineage and the complexities of South Africa's brutal racist apartheid system. The story told through the eyes of a Canadian born girl,Kim, and an African boy, Themba, who has experienced his own lost, pulls in the reader, so that we too experience the various nuances that impact all who are touched by the evil that apartheid condoned. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

I am reading this with my son who has to read it for 7th grade. While he does not like it I do! And I am really having fun talking to him about it.

An historical novel such as "Afrika" is a great way to provide a lot of facts in a very entertaining and special way. Highly recommended.

This was an interesting breath taking novel. Sometimes I cried about this book other times I laughed. All and all I love this book.

I had to read this book for a school project. I could hardly get through it. the only reason i bothered finishing it was because i had to for school. It was extremely boring with almost no plot line. for the school project i had to find the climax. i couldn't find it because the whole book was equaly boring. hope this helps. :)

I've been putting together OKRs for years when I read this book, and finally I realize what we were doing wrong. Our OKRs were complicated, long, had too many metrics... just like the OKRs the young CEO creates the first time around. Then the hotshot CTO comes aboard and tells them to make them simple, memorable, and focused. I realized that I was having the most success focusing my team on a simple yet aspirational goal and single metric to measure success. The old OKR was trying to do so much it was hard to remember, my new OKRs are more focused, powerful, and better at galvanizing the team. I now also include metrics for team health and also code health, so I can stay on top of morale and code quality and it feels much more complete. I was skeptical about the 'fable' format, but it was so much easier to read and made the message easier to grasp and stickier, so much I can turn to my designer and tell her to balance her 'Jack' mission with Hanna's 'keep the lights on' practicality. In short, this is a great, short, and necessary read for all product managers and anyone who leads teams.

There are an inexcusable number of typos in this book about accountability. I'll be returning it and will look for some articles on OKR which have been proofread.

The insight this book offers on how to set OKRs is actually very helpfy, but it takes forever to get there, and you have to put up with dozens of typos on your way.Bottom line is, I'm better at OKRs than I was before I read the book, but the content that was most useful could have been written in a blog post.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a fairly short read. I was able to read the entire book while flying a couple of times, and took my time by re-reading a few areas. While many of the topics are ones I've covered in other books, I found the way in which the author approached the topic resonated with me more easily.The case study in the beginning is well written and far more interesting than a typical case study. Yet it really helps to drive home the importance of identifying specific objectives and remaining diligent in focusing on meeting those goals we've set out to achieve. It also covers how having specific roles and adhering to those roles helps so that everyone is contributing to a universal goal by using their individual strengths.So often we get distracted at work with so many urgent and important things swirling around simultaneously. It's important to be reminded that every time we sway from the responsibilities of our role (even when wearing multiple hats), we're unintentionally taking steps to lead us further away from the goals we've already identified.I always state this at work, but without remaining focused on our objectives and how our role contributes to that, it's so easy to start making decisions that, while seemingly good and helpful in some way, are not in line with those objectives. Six months later, everyone looks up and wonders how the hell we got where we are. It's a symptom of not having radical focus. I also liked the emphasis on taking time to review with everyone the status of things with everyone, discussing the progress that has been made, and the check-ins which can help celebrate small and big wins, and also spot when things are spiraling off the tracks. Highly recommend the book.

I came from a company where someone tried to use OKRs and failed. I had a bad taste in my mouth and it seemed like more dogma without much substance. Wodtke is an excellent storyteller who draws the reader to the subject with a great business fable.Wodtke is also author of Information Architecture one of the best books on that topic.There's also plenty of resources and solid advice for working with OKRs.It's the kind of book that's both a good read and information that could improve your life or your business.I immediately bought extra copies for colleagues. Buy this book you will not regret it.

Quick read on one way to look at OKR. First part of the book is laid out as a fictional story about a startup which starts using OKR. It acted as a good introduction to OKR but could have been shorted down a bit. Second part contained more specific tips on how to start using it and how the pieces fit together. I really liked this part since it very informative and straight forward. I also liked the examples/stories from guest writers which felt like it gave the book additional perspectives about OKR usage

This book does what it sets out to do in a very well-researched and highly readable manner; it is a cultural history of ghosts in Britain from about the 9th century through to the present. The book also contains many full-color images of ghosts represented in art or literature or popular media. I don't think it's a downside at all that the book only covers Britain. A larger geographic scope would make the book unwieldy. As well, I'm sure most people are familiar with British cultural history, including Beowulf, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and others.Whether or not you believe in ghosts is beside the point; real or not, the concept has had an important influence on culture for many centuries. I think trying to understand why the concept of ghosts has been around for so long, and what it means for each era, is the driving force for the book. I think this sentence from the Introduction sums this up: "It is precisely this ingredient - that ghosts are people of sorts, humanity's shadows, but at the same time utterly remote - that accounts for the enduring fascination they exert".My only qualm with the book is that it is written in British English. Fortunately nearly all the words are the same as in American English, but some spellings threw me for a loop. Given that this book covers the cultural history of ghosts in Britain., the spelling, I guess, makes sense.

Bill O'Reilly is a very smart guy, but this book is absolutely horrible and is filled with historical errors from beginning to end. I am a founding member of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, and I still volunteer there, I was a founding member of the National Center for Civil War Studies at LSU, and I have been a military historian all my life since high school. I was given this book as a gift, and quite frankly, I was appalled at how grossly inaccurate almost everything in it is.The book is extremely simplistic, obviously written for grade-school students. Aside from that, countless historical facts in this book are simply not true. It's probably the poorest research work I've ever seen. There's really not much about Hitler in the book, more about Patton, as others have stated, and most of that is straight off of Wikipedia. I knew I was in trouble early when the book discusses the Ardennes offensive and mentions the dreaded "Panther II" tanks (there's no such thing as a Panther II tank), and mentions German divisions in the battle that were on the Russian front at that time and took no part in the battle whatsoever.I read the whole thing (it's a very fast read) just to see if it remained this way throughout, and yes, from beginning to end, it's largely long-repeated falsehoods that were proven to be propaganda ages ago, and in many cases, it appears whoever actually wrote this (I refuse to believe O'Reilly could've done this bad of a job) got a whole lot of facts confused by simply skimming through some basic WWII history books and then jumbling up the facts, names, places, and dates. There is a LOT of wrong information in this book, not just a little, a helluva' lot.Can't recommend this for any reason at all, it's a shame a lot of people will read this and think it's actual history. For the best on Hitler's final days, read "The Last 100 Days" and "The Bunker" and that will give you a whole lot more facts and what the last days of Hitler were actually like.

Great overview of this psychopath and his girl friend. Should be required reading in schools. Well researched from relatives involved with this madman during the War and, yes, it's a page turner. If you like pictures that help place the story you won't be disappointed. The book also briefly covers a number of other events such as the treasure trove found at the Merkers mine, the liberation of the death camps, and more. Highly recommended.

This was a gift for my Grandson at his request. He is 15 and at the age where he is interested in History and in WWII. His Mom told me that when the book arrived he was thrilled. He knows (because of good teachers and a military-honoring family) who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. I perused the book before I sent it and it is VERY well written and researched. I would recommend this book highly.

Money grab!Bill O'Reilly rehashed entire passages from his book Killing Patton for Hitler's Last Days.Not impressed at all for what I paid for the kindle edition. I would say 50% of Hitler's Last Days comes directly, word for word, from Killing Patton.

I read this immediately after reading Killing Patton which was a mistake. Most of this books content is also in the Killing Patton book and appears to be for readers that do not intend to get the Patton book. So I was a little disappointed on the lack of new content or word this better, many exact quotes from the Patton book but still worth reading.

A well written, fact filled book by O'Reilly. This man writes so well that you think you are actually there back then witnessing the actual events. Learned lot of fact about this madman Hitler and his cronies.....one of the best written on this subject....Mr. O'Reilly is just a genius in his research to write such and interesting book.....I have been buying all of his books to read, as it's great to be able to read his imput so dramatic and fact filled, that I forget where I'm at, instead back in time actually seeing this history take place for myself. I greatly admire Bill O'Reilly...I wish I had him for my history teacher, so will just have to be content with his books.

Very short, and not very well written. I'm typically a fan of O'Reilly's writing, but this book (really more like an extended magazine essay) is mired with sophomoric prose and phrasings. It's my understanding that this book is actually an excerpt from a larger whole, but truthfully I don't know that I would be very interested in reading it. By comparison, the works of Shirer are much more skillfully rendered, and actually have a way of sounding modern and approachable, unlike this book which is full of charged and awkward phraseology.

An easy read, documenting the major events and historical figures of the last 6 months of World War II. The author makes personal the experiences of the good and bad of events leading to the surrender by Germany. Leading figures of the War are offered up as real people with personalities and character. Get to know who they were, and the difference they made in our lives. Appreciate what they did, and we don’t have to do. Learn about Hitler, the man in all his hatred and arrogance. Learn from what happened so we don’t allow intolerance to rear it’s ugly head again

This is a great read! I learned a lot! (Never too late to learn.) A couple of years ago I did visit many of the places that was covered in this book.This book is a must read for all to see what a sick person Hitler was.

I have been to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall and I also got to see Benjamin Franklin's grave and also the graves of several other signers. This book went into a little more detail about the lives of a few other signers like Jefferson and Adams. It looks into what their lives were like and sometimes wonder what it was like back then and be able to meet them but this sheds a little info what it was like. Great book to read if you like history and the signers.

I love reading about good people who made a difference in the formation of our great nation and this book is very informative and well written! It is a very satisfying and informative read.

This is a book of short stories about men who signed the Declaration of Independence. They give you a good introduction to these men and their times...makes you want to learn more about each of them.

Very interesting to see where these men come from, how they grew up and what motivated them to put the lives of themselves and their families on the line for what most assumed was a lost cause merely because they thought it was the right thing to do. Could use them again now. well written and infomative

Florid language and a writing style probably typical for the period cause this excellent book to be difficult but rewarding. The author is highly descriptive and perhaps “politically correct “ long before society in general rewarded cowardly prose. A worthwhile read

Despite the age of this book it bears the attention of serious students of early U.S. history. The author either knew from his personal experience or from reporters one remove from the subjects of his study. He obviously knew more and told more about the signers from New England and the Middle Atlantic states but his stories of the three most southern colonies' signers were accurate first or second person glimpses. The absolute courage of the 56 signers comes across very clearly.

A very good account of those individuals who had signed the Declaration of independence. Each man is identified by personal information and actual benefits to state and county. Just, as you read each account, they seem to say how each man was exemplified by virtues not matched by others. I'm sure each man was superior to others in his community, but each of these men were an asset to our freedom not equaled by others.

This is full of insights into the character of the signers of the signers that most modern history has pushed aside. These are patriots that have never gotten their full due as far as the important roles they played in securing our Liberty. Yes, there are a couple of "Rascals" in the bunch, but only a couple. The book is written in the language of 1834 and in spots needs to be read over again to get the correct meaning. We don't use some of those words anymore or in the same context. It can be a hard read untill you get used to it. The best part is comming accross quotes that are every bit as deserving as if they came from a Franklin or Jefferson.

An excellent book. Am giving copies to my 13 year old grandson and his best buddy this very afternoon. Not only is it interesting to read, but the design of the book is stellar. There are many highlighted quotations and photographs to help bring alive the story for young minds. And the rich-looking cover! Made to look like currency, it has foil and feels three-dimensional, with great details. With hats off to the author, and to Raphael Geroni Design, for a gorgeous book inside and out.

Listed as for teens, but great for easy, quick reading with lots of info. I wanted it for background before seeing the musical HAMILTON.

Alexander Hamilton was a brilliant man, and this book describes all about his life perfectly!! It also has some pictures of his enemies and friends!
